Photos: Creative Self-Expression Show

Sasha Barkhaus' painting won Best in Show and will advance to the national Creative Self-Expression Show, where she stands to win a college scholarship

Friends and families of Whitefish Bay High School art students admired student artwork Thursday night during the annual Creative Self-Expression Show at The Great Frame Up. About 340 students submitted their work to the high school’s annual art show, but only 41 works are selected. All two-dimensional pieces of artwork were framed by the shop at 507 E. Silver Spring free of charge, and students get to keep their framed artwork. Sasha Barkhaus' painting, titled 'Brother', was named Best of Show. Her work will now advance to the national Creative Self Expression Show, where she stands to win a college scholarship. A panel of judges also chose winners in each individual art category. Black and white architectural shot takes first in The Great Frame Up's monthly photo contest.

The winner of The Great Frame Up's monthly photo contest is CJ Schmit, whose shot, "Arched in Black and White," earned 122 Facebook 'likes' in June. As a reward, the photo will be framed and given to the photographer. To weigh in on the contest, follow the business on Facebook and 'like' your favorite photo. Winning Photo: 'Night Drive'

Patch will regularly feature the top photo from The Great Frame Up's monthly photo contest.

Each month, Whitefish Bay Patch will feature the winning photo from The Great Frame Up's monthly photo contest. The winner of the May contest is Andrew Scholz, whose shot, "Night Bridge," portrays scenes of lights on a highway bridge at night. Each month, the photo will be framed by The Great Frame Up and given to the photographer. This month, the framing studio will turn over the voting to Facebook fans, who are encouraged to "like" the photo of their choice. At the end of the month, the photo with the most "likes" will be the winner. To see past contest winners, add The Great Frame Up on Facebook and see the "Photo Contest Winners" album.

Gallery Hosts Student Art Show Thursday

The top 32 pieces of artwork from Whitefish Bay High School students will be on display.

Some of the top pieces of artwork from Whitefish Bay High School students will be on display at The Great Frame Up’s Student Self Expression Show on Thursday night. More than 300 students submitted their work to the high school’s annual art show, but only 32 works are selected. The Great Frame Up then frames the two-dimensional pieces of artwork, and all of the work is then judged again. A winner from each category (painting, drawing, three dimensional and photography/printmaking), is selected. A best of show piece is selected to compete on a national level in Los Angeles, where the student has an opportunity to win a scholarship. The remainder of the artwork is sent to Children's Hospital and is placed on display in the children's gallery…
