Bites Nearby: A Little Chic in Shorewood

North Star American Bistro adds some pizzazz to the North Shore.

Milwaukee has its downtown scene, but sometimes you just want a good, classy meal without driving in circles looking for parking. The North Star American Bistro relocated to a bigger and better building just across the street on Oakland Avenue, and caters to those finer dining cravings without the burden and bustle of downtown. As I walked in, my eyes immediately went up. The restaurant has 20-foot high ceilings with large, modern paintings and photographs throughout giving it a very retro look. Deep, maroon walls accented with stony gray brick pillars make it feel inviting and nothing short of timeless. North Star is divided into to parts. Just inside the front door is the hostess and a massive bar with high-top tables. We were greeted by…

I'm really sorry to hear others are experiencing what we did as well. I was hoping we just hit a couple of off nights. This was one of our favorite places to go when they were were in the old location across the street. Food was consistently good, wait staff was professional and attentive. I assume it's the same ownership/management, but maybe not. It just seems like such a drastic change in …   more ›

Bites Nearby: Oakcrest Tavern Fish Fry on Good Friday, but Tiramisu Takes the Cake

Breaded, deep-fried cod filet, smothered in cheddar cheese on a toasty bun, finished my fish hankering but was topped by a creamy piece of tiramisu.

It's an odd combination, deep-fried fish and a cocoy, creamy piece of tiramisu, but Oakcrest Tavern in Shorewood satiated that craving. Right across the street from Sendik's, Oakcrest's banner says "Eat, Drink, Be Merry, Repeat" and that is definitely what can be accomplished there. The place isn't small, but it isn't really large either. Within a few feet of the front door you can go left and have a seat at their fully stocked bar and plethora of televisions to catch sports games, or head to the right, and be met by a friendly waitstaff for a plentiful meal. We took a seat at one of the tables instead of a booth — odd, because I usually prefer a booth. It was cold, damp and dreary outside and the waitress immediately asked if I'd like the…

Bites Nearby: Hubbard Park Lodge is a Trek to Find, and a Trip to Visit

A little polka and a fish fry anyone?

Usually Shorewood is known for its upscale, moderately priced restaurants featuring chic cuisine, and usually some peppy pop music in the background. But what about tradition and culture? Hubbard Park Lodge brings some of those traditional customs back to the North Shore with a very family-friendly atmosphere and some good, hearty food. This restaurant is everything within the definition of unique, beginning with the entrance. The Lodge is located right on the river, but to get to it, you have to drive to a parking lot at 3565 N Morris Blvd., and then continue through a very colossal tunnel that looks to end in the middle of a forest. The expedition continues along a lengthy, curvy trail where you'll then begin to approach the Lodge. Up a …
