The Whitefish Bay gymnastics team will head to the state tournament this weekend with hopes of winning its fourth championship in the last five seasons and its sixth championship overall. The Blue Dukes will advance to their 18th state team tournament after winning their sectional meet on Friday night. Freshman Mary Claire Potter finished first overall, winning the balance beam, floor exercise and uneven bars competitions. Freshman Sarah Kenlay finished third overall, tying for second in uneven bars and placing fifth in the balance beam competition. A single free throw was enough to give Milwaukee Washington a win over Whitefish Bay boys in a close regional finals game in Sherman Park Saturday night.
After leading Milwaukee Washington all game, the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes started to see its sectional hopes in jeopardy when the Purgolders tied up the game halfway through the fourth quarter. A tense Whitefish Bay fan section watched as Washington stole a ball in backcourt and electrified their home crowd with a dunk. Down by one point, the Blue Dukes tied the game with a free throw with 24 seconds remaining on the clock. The Purgolders then drew a foul with three seconds remaining. The resulting free throw shot put an end to the Blue Dukes' 17-7 season. The Whitefish Bay boys basketball team easily handled their first post-season game of the season, toppling Milwaukee Morse-Marshall/Juneau in a 78-40 win at home Friday night. With the win, the Blue Dukes will advance to the next level of regionals against Milwaukee Washington at Washington High School at 6 p.m. Saturday. Whitefish Bay is seeded third in their Division 2 Sectional. Washington, which beat Milwaukee's Bradley Tech 69-63 at home Friday night, is seeded second in the sectional. The winner of Saturday night's matchup will advance to sectionals.

High school hockey coaches selected WNS Storm defenseman Thomas Aiken as one of the top eight hockey players in the state.
Whitefish Bay High School senior Thomas Aiken is one of eight finalists in the running for the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association Player of the Year award. High school hockey coaches from around the state vote in the American Family Insurance/WHCA Player of the Year award, according to a news release on Wisconsin Prep Hockey. After the initial round of voting, members of the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association have cut the list of players down to eight. WNS Storm coach Maco Balkovec nominated Aiken for the honors, saying WHCA coaches will never see another player like him again. Rashadeem Gray becomes the only wrestler in Whitefish Bay history to qualify for state three times.
With two wrestlers headed to the state tournament Thursday, Whitefish Bay's wrestling program is making school history. Rashadeem Gray is the only wrestler in Whitefish Bay history to qualify for state three times, and Joey Davey is the third wrestler in school history to qualify twice. Gray and Davey are also the third and fourth wrestlers in Whitefish Bay history to get to 100 wins. Gray, who will play football at the University of Northern Iowa next year, is a standout athlete in football, wrestling and track. He holds Whitefish Bay wrestling records for career wins (113), takedowns in a season (127), career escapes, and escapes in a season (127). In a close North Shore Conference matchup Friday night, a Grafton basketball player gave his team a 36-35 edge over Whitefish Bay when he hit a jump shot at the third-quarter buzzer. The player claimed he was fouled, and a bench of Grafton coaches jumped up to give the ref a piece of their mind. According to Youtube user Ryan Ellerbusch, a Grafton assistant coach was called for a technical foul for arguing with the referees over the call. Whitefish Bay was granted two technical foul free throws, adding to the aggravation on the Grafton bench. After another quarter of play, Whitefish Bay ended up beating Grafton 55-44. Grant Menard, Rashadeem Gray and Jake Taylor all committed to Division I college athletic programs Wednesday.
Three Whitefish Bay senior athletes will move on to NCAA Division I athletic programs after graduating in the spring. Grant Menard formally committed to Drake University, a Division I football team in Des Moines, IA. Menard, who was named First Team All-North Shore Conference, had a 55 percent pass completion rate this year, finding a receiver on 66 of his 121 attempts for a total of 1,100 yards, according to WisSports. In his junior year, he completed 45 of his 109 attempts for a total of 744 yards. He's also a strong runner, with 247 rushing yards this year and 98 yards his junior year. The donation made on behalf of Jeffrey Hayes puts the Cumberland tennis court reconstruction project within $16,000 of its $128,000 goal.
Jeffrey Hayes passed away in June, but thanks to a donation made in his memory, his passion for education and tennis will live on in Whitefish Bay. The $50,000 donation to the Cumberland tennis court reconstruction project was made in December by Hayes' wife Leslie and their children. The School Board formally thanked the family for their donation at a later meeting. Leslie Hayes said Jeffrey, a professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was a strong supporter of education and loved the game of tennis. “Jeffrey would be happy to know that his love of tennis will now be enjoyed by future generations,” she said. The Nathan Potter Heart Award honors Bay wrestlers who show the same grit and persistence as Potter, who was murdered in 2009.
Whitefish Bay alum Nathan Potter may be gone, but his legend lives on in the heart of Whitefish Bay wrestlers. Potter, who was murdered in Milwaukee in 2009, is memorialized with an annual award called "The Nathan Potter Heart Award," which is presented annually to the Whitefish Bay wrestler who best reflects Potters's commitment, persistence, effort and grit on the wrestling mat. This year's recipient was Max Carlin, a Whitefish Bay senior who is making a name for himself in the 113-pound and 120-pound weight classes. Carlin, who competed in the state tournament last year, also posted 36 victories, breaking the team record for most wins in a season.
