Milestones Parents Voice Concerns About Before- and After-School Programs

School district officials respond to parents' concerns with new details about teacher ratios, quality assurance measures and the district's vision for child development.

Whitefish Bay parents who use before- and after-school programs packed the School Board meeting Wednesday night to share their concerns. The School Board meeting comes two weeks after the Whitefish Bay School District ended its partnership with Milestones Programs for Children, a nonprofit daycare provider that leases space at Cumberland and Richards elementary schools. The news of the district ending the 33-year partnership to provide its own before- and after-school programs surprised parents, who said they have learned to trust and admire Milestones' programs over the years. "To me, it's kind of like saying we're going to kick out Winkie's, to not have milestones here," said Whitefish Bay resident Gary Nadolsky. "It's a landmark for …

I am late to this site but I think the commenters are missing half the point. Half is the money but the other half is control. The school district and in particular the principals want to control the entire day because they are sure they will do a better job than milestones has. This is fine if you think the school district is perfect but if you dont then this is quite a problem! Will some of the…   more ›

Orvold's Memory Lives On in Scholarship Fund, Art Project

Whitefish Bay Middle School is seeking donations for a Mr. O scholarship fund and for a tile mural that allows students to express the values instilled by the school's former associate principal.

Four months after the passing of Chuck Orvold, members of the Whitefish Bay Middle School community have come up with a way to ensure the former associate principal's values will be instilled in students for years to come. Orvold passed away in October due to complications associated with pancreatic cancer. He served as associate principal for 22 years. The Mr. O Scholarship would be an annual $500 scholarship granted to two Whitefish Bay seniors at the awards convocation ceremony each spring. High school and middle school teachers would both provide input into deciding which students are most worthy of the scholarship money. "We wanted to reflect the attributes that Chuck modeled every day: kindness respect and fairness," said Middle …

Cumberland Recognized for Academic Achievement, Progress

Cumberland was one of nine Title 1 schools that exceeded state standards for academic achievement and progress.

Cumberland Elementary School is one of 65 Title I schools in the state to be recognized for academic achievement and academic progress. In a news release, the state Department of Public Instruction recognized 65 Title I schools who have met or exceeded state standards for academic achievements and progress. Title I is a federal program to support schools serving low-income students. Eleven schools were recognized as "high-achieving," while 45 were recognized as "high-progress." Cumberland was one of nine schools earning both designations. “Congratulations to the teachers, school staff members, and families that work to support student achievement in these schools,” said state Superintendent Tony Evers. “These reward schools are models of …

Did the School District Make the Right Choice on Before- and After-School Care?

We want to know your opinion on the Whitefish Bay School District's decision to offer its own before- and after-school programs instead of Milestones Programs for Children.

The Whitefish Bay School District's decision to offer before- and after-school programs through the district's Recreation Department instead of Milestones Programs for Children generated dozens of comments on Patch this week. One user said they "have confidence (the district) will do all they can to guarantee that the program operates at the same level of excellence as our schools do (generally) and that our kids are served by trained professionals." Other users said they were upset by the decision. One user even said "Cumberland parents are already organizing to walk across the street to Holy Family, where Milestones has had a wonderful program in place for years." Of course, with anonymous comments, there's no way to prove if these are …

Teachers Receive $17K for Educational Materials

The Whitefish Bay Public Education Foundation's Ed Nuss Grant program will provide the school district with document cameras, ukuleles and a scale that measures body fat.

Tight budgets prevent school officials from fulfilling all of the purchasing requests that come across their desks, but in Whitefish Bay, a good number of teachers' requests are able to be fulfilled through the Ed Nuss Grant program. The grants are awarded twice each year by the Whitefish Bay Public Education Foundation, which receives community contributions through The Bay Ball, Run the Bay and general donations. The grants—which usually total more than $10,000—are based on innovative requests that come directly from Whitefish Bay teachers. The Education Foundation recently granted $17,605 in Ed Nuss grants, which is nearly a third of the $60,527 requested by teachers. The recent round of grant allocations went for these materials: In …

$50K Tennis Court Donation Made in Memory of UWM Professor

The donation made on behalf of Jeffrey Hayes puts the Cumberland tennis court reconstruction project within $16,000 of its $128,000 goal.

Jeffrey Hayes passed away in June, but thanks to a donation made in his memory, his passion for education and tennis will live on in Whitefish Bay. The $50,000 donation to the Cumberland tennis court reconstruction project was made in December by Hayes' wife Leslie and their children. The School Board formally thanked the family for their donation at a later meeting. Leslie Hayes said Jeffrey, a professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was a strong supporter of education and loved the game of tennis. “Jeffrey would be happy to know that his love of tennis will now be enjoyed by future generations,” she said. The three Cumberland School courts, originally built in the 1940s, haven’t been used in years, and the …

Whitefish Bay Takes Ownership of Before- and After-School Programs

The Whitefish Bay School District expects to generate as much as $225,000 in annual revenue by ending its 33-year partnership with Milestones Programs for Children.

Starting next school year, Whitefish Bay School District will do away with its 33-year partnership with Milestones Programs for Children and offer its own before- and after-school programming. Milestones, a nonprofit daycare provider, currently leases space at Cumberland and Richards elementary schools, where it provides before-and after-school programs to young children. Last week, the school district notified Milestones it would not be renewing its annual lease, and would offer its own before- and after-school programs. The district sent out information about the change to parents last week, and additional information is expected to be shared later this week. Similar to Milestones, the district will start providing child care at 7 a.m. …

Four Whitefish Bay Middle School students could face juvenile charges for brandishing an unlocked BB gun and pellet gun at Whitefish Bay High School Wednesday. One 13-year-old student and three 12-year-old students were questioned and released to their parents. All four students will be referred to Milwaukee County Children’s Court Center for review of charges that will include possession of a dangerous weapon on school premises, …

Bob McBride, smh, its so very sad. I wish people werent this way, but they are. Its easy to comment and judge, but not so easy to reveal their kids, or their own "sticky mistakes". Go sit in court in WFB, and see how many times WFB kids get off..... While I agree that kids should be kept out of harms way, but please consider ALL the dangers that are harmful, and way worse than a pellet gun. smh …   more ›
