Person of the Year: Katie Commer's Volunteer Roots Run Deep

This Whitefish Bay mom spends her free time circulating fundraising sheets and coordinating volunteers for projects that make Whitefish Bay a better place to live.

When a need arises in the community, Katie Commer is always willing to step up. A lifelong Whitefish Bay resident with two kids in the school district, Commer is no stranger to organizing fundraisers, chairing event committees and creating miniature task force groups of her own to address needs she sees in the community. Perfect example: About seven years ago, Commer decided to collect gifts for underprivileged families in the Cumberland School community. Cumberland Principal Jayne Heffron selected multiple families in need, and asked those students to confidentially submit a Christmas wish list. Without ever knowing the names of the kids, Commer and her email list of about 50 Whitefish Bay friends were able to fill the wish lists and …

Nominate Whitefish Bay's Person of the Year

Whitefish Bay Patch is taking nominations for volunteers and other people who are doing positive things in the community.

It's the end of the year, and Whitefish Bay Patch has had the privilege of meeting some amazing people who are doing great things. For example, we told the story of Paul Sandvick creating free mouthguards for local athletes, Aviya Stein quilting for children with heart defects, and an entire high school's efforts to help a 12-year-old girl with a life-threatening disease meet her idol, Taylor Swift. The list goes on and on in Whitefish Bay. Even with everything we've mentioned, we know there are people doing good that we have never heard about. This December, we'd like your help determing the Whitefish Bay Patch person of the year. You can nominate anyone who lives, works or volunteers in town. But nominations close at 9 a.m. Dec. 13, so …
