Blue Dukes End Season With Overtime Loss to Waunakee

Whitefish Bay lost 35-28 to the defending Division 2 state champions in a 35-28 nail-biter that would have sent the Blue Dukes to their first-ever state tournament.

Whitefish Bay's record football season came to an end against Waunakee in a WIAA Division 2 state semi-final game at Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday afternoon. Trailing 28-14 less than three minutes to go, the Blue Dukes (10-1) came from behind with two touchdowns to tie up the game and force the Waunakee Warriors (11-0) into overtime for the first time in multiple seasons. Waunakee scored in overtime to win the game 35-28. Waunakee has won the Division 2 state title the last three years, and in this year's state title match, it will face off against Homestead, who Bay beat earlier in the season. Saturday's game against Whitefish Bay was Waunakee's 48th consecutive victory, matching Manitowoc (1983-87) for the longest streak in state …

Gray, Blue Dukes Shock Spartans With Comeback Win

After beating Brookfield East on Friday, the Whitefish Bay football team will play Watertown or Waunakee next weekend with a trip to the state championship game on the line.

It’s hard to keep a good player down for long. Even harder to do so to a great one like Rashadeem Gray. The Brookfield East Spartans found that out the hard way Friday. After being completely bottled up in the first half of a Level 3 WIAA Division 2 football playoff game, the Whitefish Bay senior running back exploded and carried the Blue Dukes to a 24-14 victory. Whitefish Bay (10-1) will play the winner of Saturday’s Waunakee-Watertown game next weekend in a state semifinal, the first time the Blue Dukes have ever reached that level. “It’s never been done here and we’re making history,” Gray said. “Slowly but surely, we’re making history. We want to be the first class in Madison and I think we’ll get it done.” For two and a half quarters…

Return of The Glory Cup: Football, Pranks and a Neighborly Rivalry

The series between the Shorewood and Whitefish Bay football teams dates back to the 1930s and was notorious for student pranks.

Friday night, in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs, Whitefish Bay and Shorewood will play football against each other for the first time in 11 years. The programs have had little in common recently, playing in dramatically different leagues and experiencing different levels of success. Even Shorewood’s name has changed after forming a co-op with Messmer. So it’s easy to forget these two neighboring schools played 67 consecutive years for The Glory Cup, a rivalry marked by pranks so rampant that schools took to leaving stadium lights on overnight during the week and stationing police officers on rooftops. “I think a lot of the Shorewood kids thought Whitefish Bay was snobby and was full of rich kids, and a few of the Whitefish Bay kids had it in…

Interesting.....I'd say these days the kids at Bay are apt to consider Homestead as a rival. Shorewood and WFB are very different communities in may ways. My kids know many more Homestead and Nicolet kids so they care much more about those competitions. Shorewood isn't even in our conference and rarely meet up - plus they are D2 for many sports.   more ›
