Vice presidential candidates' wives Jill Biden and Janna Ryan make stops in Waukesha Saturday - as do Democratic Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.
Waukesha was the epicenter of the state and national political scene Saturday as Democratic and Republican candidates and their surrogates visited the city to encourage volunteers to make the final push for votes in the Nov. 6 election. Democratic Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, were at President Barack Obama’s campaign office in downtown Waukesha. Earlier in the day, on the other side of town, Paul Ryan’s wife, Janna Ryan, was joined by U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brad Courtney and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. And there's more to come. Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who is running against Baldwin for the U.S. Senate, plans …

Days after a video was released showing Jason Thompson joking about sending Barack Obama back to Kenya, another video is leaked revealing he has made the comment at least one other time.
Tommy Thompson's U.S. Senate's campaign has taken some heat this week after the former governor’s son said the upcoming presidential election is an opportunity to send President Barack Obama back to Kenya. But it turns out it's not the first time that phrase has come up during a GOP rally featuring Jason Thompson. In a video obtained by the Huffington Post, Jason Thompson tells a group of supporters at a rally in Fond du Lac on Oct. 6: "We have an opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago." The crowd responds with cheers and a few audience members yell out, "Back to Kenya." "That would even be better," Jason Thompson joked. The video was recorded by a Democratic tracker, HuffPo says. It came out a few days after the first video …
Marquette University Law School's newest poll puts the presidential race between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney and Wisconsin's U.S. Senate race as too close to call.
The presidential race is a dead heat in Wisconsin, according to a Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday. President Barack Obama has 49 percent of the support of likely voters polled, while Republican Mitt Romney has 48 percent. "The candidates are separated by fractions of percentages," noted Professor Charles Franklin, who oversees the poll for the university. The first presidential debate had a signficant impact on the respondants, he added. Just two weeks ago, Obama led Romney by 14 points; 54 to 40 percent, but among those who watched the first debate, Romney took the lead by two points, 50 to 48. Obama retains a wide margin by those who did not watch the debate, 50 to 42 percent. "Rarely has a debate produced such a …

Strong words address congresswoman's changing votes on Iranian sanctions, but former governor goes farther in questioning Baldwin's support for the Jewish people.
In a wide-ranging attack on his opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Republican Tommy Thompson on Sunday called Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin "anti-Jewish" and "anti-Israel." It was far stronger language than Thompson had previously used in charging that Baldwin had repeatedly voted against having the U.S. impose sanctions on Iran before consistently voting for them only since beginning her Senate campaign. "Tammy Baldwin, her whole record is anti-Israel," Thompson said at a press conference in Wauwatosa. "She voted for the first time for the sanctions three months ago because she knew she was running for the U.S. Senate. That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard. "She's anti-Israel, she's anti-Jewish and she's trying to now somehow …

President Barack Obama still leads Republican challenger Mitt Romney by double digits, Democrat Tammy Baldwin's edge over Republican Tommy Thompson in U.S. Senate race is lessening, new Marquette University Law School poll shows.
A poll released Wednesday by Marquette University shows President Barack Obama maintaining a sizable lead over Republican Mitt Romney among likely Wisconsin voters. Two weeks ago, Obama led Romney 54 to 40 percent, according to the poll. The latest poll, released the same day at the first presidential debate, has Obama's lead is down to 11 points — 53 to 42 percent. The U.S. Senate race, though, between Democrat U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and former Gov. Tommy Thompson shows some signs of tightening. In August, Thompson led Baldwin by 9 points, but in September, results flipped, giving Baldwin the 9-point nod. But Wednesday's poll has Baldwin with the edge by a smaller margin — 48 to 44 percent. That's barely outisde the poll's margin of …

Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson is taking on Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin for the chance to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate — taking the seat now held by Democrat Herb Kohl, who is retiring in January. The race has drawn national attention and endorsements because Republicans have a shot to wrestle the seat away from Democrats. Depending on outcomes in other states, the November election could help give the GOP control of the Senate. Although Thompson was leading Baldwin after his August primary election win, the Madison congresswoman has been in the lead in the most recent polls. In its analysis of the race, the nonpartisan RealClearPolitics.com says: "Baldwin received quite a bump in the polls in the wake of the …

Former Republican governor says his Democratic opponent in U.S. Senate race is too liberal; she claims he represents special-interest groups in Washington.
Trailing in the polls, former Gov. Tommy Thompson went on the attack Friday night against U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in their first debate for the U.S. Senate race. Republican Thompson portrayed his Democratic opponent as a “taxer and a spender” who is outside the mainstream, according to WisPolitics.com. My opponent is so far to the extreme even her party doesn’t pass any of her legislation," Thompson said. The Associated Press reported that Thompson spent most of the debate on the attack, casting himself as a visionary reformer and branding Baldwin "a taxer and a spender." "When you don't have a record, you attack the other person," he said. "I get things done. I don't criticize the other side. I make sure things happen." Baldwin wasn't shy…

Shifts among Independents has support swinging more Democratic than Republican.
The race for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat has taken a dramatic turn as Democrat Tammy Baldwin has opened up a 9 percentage point lead over Republican Tommy Thompson, according to a Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday. Baldwin, a congresswoman from Madison, is leading the former governor by 50 percent to 41 percent among likely voters. In an August Marquette poll, Thompson led Baldwin 50 percent to 41 percent. President Barack Obama also widened his lead from a month ago. Obama leads Republican challenger Mitt Romney 54 percent to 40 percent, the largest margin so far in the Marquette polls. In August, Obama led 49 percent to 46 percent. Professor Charles Franklin, director of the poll, said the biggest shift in the …

The candidates agreed to square off once in Wausau and twice in Milwaukee over the next six weeks.
Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin have agreed to three televised debates prior to the Nov. 6 general election for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Herb Kohl. Two debates will be in Milwaukee and one in Wausau: "We need a new direction for our country, a direction that leaves our country in better shape for our children and grandchildren," said Thompson, the former governor and GOP nominee, in a press release Monday. "Voters deserve to hear my opponent defend the record $16 trillion in debt driven by out-of-control government spending." Baldwin, a U.S. Representative, aims to keep the seat for the Democrats as the GOP tries to gain control of the Senate with an eye on repealing the Affordable Health Care Act. She agreed to three debates…

Consider these facts before you vote: 1. Is the economy better off now than it was four years ago? Based on the evidence, I'd have to say no. Wages are down, the the prices of everything we buy is up. The price of gas has doubled. Good jobs are scarce. 2. Are the slight "up tics" in the economy a solid trend in the right direction? I don't think so. First, the gains are very slight. Second, I …   more ›
