Taxpayers To Pay Up to $2 Million to Move 1,300 People Buried In County Cemetery

The bodies of the poor and indigent people buried near Froedtert Hospital will be moved at the expense of $1.5 million to $2 million.

If there's no rest for the weary, there certainly won't be any rest for up to 1,300 poor people buried in unmarked graves near Froedtert Hospital. A paupers' cemetery will be moved to make room for Froedtert's expansion, but the move will cost Milwaukee County taxpayers up to $2 million, according to Patch's media partners at WISN 12 News. A state hearing examiner ruled that the county will either have to pay for the graves' removal upfront or Froedtert could subtract the cost from its lease payment to the county, the Journal Sentinel reported. Froedtert Hospital's plans for a new 480,000-square-foot building to house expanded surgical, inpatient and outpatient care is proposed to stand atop what is now a cemetery containing the remains of…

Southeastern Wisconsin Foreclosure Filings Fall to Six-Year Low

Milwaukee County is one of seven counties that saw foreclosure filings decrease from January 2012.

The number of foreclosures filings in Southeastern Wisconsin fell to the lowest level in six years, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The newspaper reported that there were 720 mortgage foreclosures filings in Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha counties in January. Economists tell the paper that this demonstrates a recovering housing market and economy. In Milwaukee County, foreclosures filings decreased from January 2012 to 355 from 542, or 34.5%. I-43 Bridge Closures In Milwaukee County Begin Monday

If you travel Interstate 43, you'll need to be aware of these closures. Here's what you need to know.

Several ramps along I-43 will close beginning Monday and will remain closed until at least July, according to officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Depending on the weather, officials plan to close a single-lane from Howard Avenue to the Marquette Interchange. According to the DOT press release: This closure will start at Howard Avenue and extend north each night, until it reaches the northernmost limit of the Valley Bridge. Motorists will experience the first wave of the closure on the morning of February 12, but should remain alert for the remainder of the week as the closure progresses.   Some related northbound (NB) ramp closures will also take place: Once this set of closures are in place, the contractor, Zenith …

Would Sheriff Cuts Hurt the Suburbs?

Greendale State Rep. Jeff Stone is concerned that the $3.3 million cut will affect services in Milwaukee County suburbs.

County Executive Chris Abele announced on Monday a proposal to cut the County Sheriff’s budget by $3.3 million and pay the City of Milwaukee just half that amount to take over county park patrols and a portion of the county's 911 calls, according to JSOnline. This cut would mean the layoff of 23 department employees, 21 of them deputies. Part of the plan sends lakefront and park patrols, plus some county 911 calls to Milwaukee police. Abele said this move would provide budget savings. Greendale State Representative Jeff Stone thinks it's not a real solution. "The County Executive's recent proposal to eliminate 23 Sheriff's Deputy positions and to give $1.6 Million to the City of Milwaukee is flawed," Stone said in a release. "It has been …

Dukes Landscaping Owner, Bay Football Coach Loses County Job

County officials allege Jim Tietjen violated county ethics rules by conducting private landscaping work on county time and using his county position to acquire business for his landscaping company.

Jim Tietjen, the owner of Dukes Landscaping and the coach of Whitefish Bay High School's football team, was fired from his job with Milwaukee County on Friday on reports of him doing private landscaping work on county time, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Tietjen, who has been Bay's football coach since 2002, told the Journal Sentinel the allegations are unfounded. Tietjen has worked for the county for 32 years, most recently as associate director of operations for the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the paper. Dukes Landscaping, which was recently contracted by Friends of Bay Baseball to spray pesticides at Cahill, was also found performing work for two county vendors, according to a memo obtained by the…

Jim Tiejen is a good man, he has worked had all of his life for the county and has created many positive things for Milwaukee. I worked and played football for this man. He was not part of any union, and had he been, this would have never left the building he worked in. He is an honest man, he came clean about what he did, and I am sure once all of the facts come out, it will show that he was not…   more ›

Rice, Cooked: Part 2

The County Board's redistricting plan could be signed as early as Monday, so the last hope in defeating the plan is to contact County Executive Chris Abele and ask him to use his veto powers.

You may recall from my blog "Rice, Cooked" in May, that the Milwaukee County Board approved a preliminary plan to redistrict the county and dissect Whitefish Bay. Part of Whitefish Bay will be added to Milwaukee's East Side district.  The other part will be added to Milwaukee's northern district.  This move effectively consolidates more power for the City of Milwaukee, redacting one suburban district. The preliminary plan was widely panned by groups near and far.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was against it, as was the NAACP, the Milwaukee Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, and Bayside, Brown Deer, Cudahy, Franklin, Fox Point, Greendale, Greenfield, River Hills and Whitefish Bay all passed official resolutions demanding the County to…

Holloway: State Should Soften Financial Blow to Milwaukee County

County Board Chairman comments after new projections were released today.

With news today that the state will receive $636 million more over the next three years than originally projected, Milwaukee County Board Chairman Lee Holloway called on the state Legislature to reverse cuts to key county services. Holloway wants the state to undo transit cuts, lift the FamilyCare enrollment cap, increase child-support assistance and help close the county's funding gap, according to a news release. "We have no local funding options other than the property tax," Holloway said. "I’m asking the state to do anything it can to narrow the funding gap for Milwaukee County and restore job access via the transit system." Holloway said the state budget proposal would cut transit funding by 10 percent and "kill the economic thrust of…

Once the Milwaukee County Board can provide evidence that it can spend that kind of funding in a productive and responsible manner (rather than dishing it out to friends and relatives that operate corrupt and/or incompetently managed social welfare providing organizations, for instance), then maybe they'll be deserving of some of this money. Until then they should concentrate on working within …   more ›

Rice, Cooked.

Milwaukee County Supervisors have cut Whitefish Bay's County Supervisor, Joe Rice, out of his district.

In Milwaukee County government, the elected Supervisors and County Executive positions are "non-partisan," but one can easily split the Supervisors into two philosophical camps:  Those that represent City of Milwaukee residents, and those who represent suburban interests.  Since the population of the city outweighs that of the suburbs, the city enjoys a perpetual majority on the County Board.  Like him or not, former County Executive Scott Walker's suburban bias helped keep some semblance of balance, although his vetoes were often overturned. Such is life in the minority. Last week, city Supervisors decided to make their majority a little bigger. County Supervisors gerrymandered one more seat for the city and will slice our 6th District …

I just moved here, and this is very disturbing. My parents live in a small town in Nebraska, paid insane taxes for the quality of life they enjoy, and were suddenly annexed by Omaha to get the tax money. The town fought it in court and tried to recall the FORMER Mayor of Omaha (Fahey) and there was nothing they could do. The taxes have not changed, but the public services are in the toilet. It …   more ›
