Why the recall results ended up in Scott Walker's favor depended on which side of the aisle you stood on.
As the evening - and the recall efforts that have held the state's attention for nearly a year and a half - came to a close, various groups offered their opinions on why the results fell so heavily in Scott Walker's favor. And as usual, they fell along party lines. The state Democratic party says Gov. Walker's involvement, or lack thereof, in the John Doe investigation doesn't meet statutory reasons for establishing a criminal defense fund.
During a conference call today with reporters, state Democratic Chair Mike Tate said he is calling on the Government Accountability Board to look more closely at why Gov. Scott Walker needs a criminal defense fund. Tate cited a state statute that outlines the reasons for a government official or their agent to establish a criminal defense fund: by either being a target of an investigation or pending being charged with a crime. Tate said Walker doesn't meet those benchmarks, based on the governor's own statements. "First he said he hadn't been contacted about the investigation," he said. "Then he's saying he was contacted and is cooperating." The question becomes, Tate continued, whether or not Walker is lying about the corruption probe or …

Scott Walker said it would not challenge the signatures on recall petitions filed with the state, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Monday released its first TV ad directed at the Republican governor. In the ad, which was scheduled to begin airing Monday night, Democrats compare the current John Doe investigation into Walker's aides with the Watergate scandal of the 1970s that resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon. The 30-second spot intermingles segments of newscasts from today with those from the Watergate era, including a couple with legendary newscaster Walter Cronkite. Friends of Scott Walker Campaign announced Monday that given the "impossible deadline" it had to challenge the 1 million signatures turned in, it would not challenge any.
The Friends of Scott Walker campaign will not challenge the signatures turned in to recall Gov. Scott Walker. The campaign is filing paperwork with the Government Accountability Board on Monday, but is apparently not challenging the signatures, according to a report by WISN TV. "We have essentially been given an impossible deadline," campaign spokeswoman Ciara Matthews told WISN 12. The campaign needed to review more than 152,000 pages of recall petitions, and while it was given a 20-day exension, a judge denied the request for two more weeks.
