Wisconsin 42nd in Private-Sector Job Growth, Report Says

Data shows that Wisconsin saw an increase of 35,381 private-sector jobs, a 1.5% increase, during a 12-month period ending in June. The top U.S. state saw a 12.1% increase in private-sector job creation.

Gov. Scott Walker won a recall election contested largely on economic issues, but the state ranked in the bottom 20 percent in the nation in private-sector job creation in the nation in the 12 months ending last June, according to government jobs data. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Wisconsin added just over 35,000 private-sector jobs, according to the Quarterly Census on Earnings and Wages, which covers 96% of the nation's public and private sector employers. That's a 1.5 percent increase. The 12 months of job creation data is considered by economists to be the most accurate information of hiring in the country, according to the Journal Sentinel. And the end of the measuring period coincided with the recall election victory …

morn, the mining bill was not about ignoring environmental laws. We still have the EPA, DNR, ACE and GOD knows how many other that still have to give their approval. The bill would have eliminated the need for the redundant studies and hearings that killed the Crandon mine.   more ›

Job Creation Top Issue for Democrats in Recall; Collective Bargaining is Last

Despite all the furor in Madison last year over the rights of public workers, new poll says Democrats are most concerned about jobs as they head to the polls in Tuesday's recall primary election.

When tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on the Wisconsin Capitol in February and March 2011, the protests were all about Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill and how it changed collective bargaining for public employees. In fact, it was the outrage over the passage of that bill — known as Act 10 when it  became law — that was the impetus for the effort to recall Walker from office. But with the Democratic primary election less than a week away, and the general recall election slated for June 5, the issue of collective bargaining has pretty much taken a back seat to jobs and other issues, according to a poll released Wednesday. The Marquette University Law School Poll says 46 percent of those who are likely to vote in Tuesday's …

Job Creators Roundtable Highlights Concerns on Taxes, Regulations

Area businesses are frustrated by high taxes and Washington bureaucrats.

I appreciated this opportunity to hear from 21 local businesses who know what it means to make a payroll and develop a business plan for growth and hiring (at a roundtable discussion on jobs in Brookfield last week). I want to thank Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce for its help in identifying businesses for this unique meeting. Job creators in my district face crushing federal government regulations and uncertainty thanks to the threat of higher taxes. Terry Welch, president of Prime Leather Finishes, shared his frustration with America’s highest-in-the-world corporate tax rate, saying: “When you start with 35 percent and you add all the state taxes, FICA, property taxes, all the fees. Now you have that little bit to grow. It’s very …

Mr Sensenbrenner, Why is it that the only whining you hear is from business. Why haven't you protected us from unregulated banking. What have YOU been doing in Washington all these years to enable this economic melt down. Surely you must realize that the only way these businesses will hire is with demand of their product and many of your constituents have been forced to curtail spending because …   more ›

Job Creators Tell Sensenbrenner Government Must Get Out of Their Way

The congressman and other elected officials from southeastern Wisconsin meet with business leaders to talk about getting America back to work.

The question of how do we — as a country — create more jobs came to Brookfield Tuesday afternoon as 15 small business leaders from the Milwaukee area met with Republican U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner. Sensenbrenner and several Republican state lawmakers who represent southeastern Wisconsin spent most of the hour-long session at the congressman's office listening to suggestions for growing business in the nation and region. The overall message was clear: lower corporate taxes; ease government regulations; get tough on illegal immigration while expanding the number of visas; change the college-focused culture; and reduce unemployment benefits.   Mary Springer, vice president of Therm-Tech of Waukesha, opened the discussion by telling the …

So, how many of you have: run a business? determined what you were going to charge for your product or service? determine all your over head costs, including but not limited to: equipment purchase, heating/lighting, facility inspections, maintenance, liability insurance, worker comp, hiring and training, government regulations, etc? From all that information determine what you can pay your …   more ›

What is Holding Back the Job Creators?

The United States is falling in global competitiveness and action must be taken now.

On Tuesday, I will be holding a Job Creators Roundtable in Brookfield to discuss what Washington can do to promote private-sector job creation and growth. I want to hear directly from small business owners and job creators in the 5th Congressional District about what obstacles they face in this current economic climate and hear about solutions that Congress can pursue to infuse confidence and certainty into the economic environment. We cannot tax and spend our way to prosperity. Out-of-control spending and the constant threat of new taxes and regulations chill hiring and discourage businesses from investing or growing. Things have gotten worse under President Obama’s economic policies, and there is no time to waste to start enacting smart…

As a former nonunion employer of a small buisness I can tell ya that the taxes and government regulations imposed on job providers is terrible. What pissed me off was having to match each employee's S.S. deduction knowing too that the Social Security fund was being pilfered bone dry by congress. When it comes to regulations anyone who's carried employee's knows what I'm talking about when I say …   more ›

Lyle - Interesting position on Ivy League schools. Especially when you stop to consider that a majority of them have economic professors, such a Paul Krugman at Princeton, teaching and preaching your highly coveted and praised Keynesian theory. This Labor Day, Support Moves to Get America Working Again

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner challenges president to support deregulation and small businesses in Thursday's speech on jobs.

Throughout our history, American ingenuity and innovation have spurred our nation forward and created a prosperous economy.  Labor Day is a day to recognize working men and women and the opportunities that make America a great place to work, raise a family, and build a life. Unfortunately, this Labor Day, confidence and hope in America’s future seem to have slipped — replaced by uncertainty and frustration. As it was last year, unemployment remains above 9 percent. For the first time, the average length of unemployment has surpassed 40 weeks. Entrepreneurship, a backbone of American economy, has slowed significantly. Since 2007, there has been a 23 percent drop in new business creation, falling to the lowest levels since 1994. The non-…

How Is Regulation Hurting Job Growth?

Rep. Sensenbrenner wants to hear from employers shackled by federal mandates.

The old adage by Benjamin Franklin goes, “The only thing certain in life is death and taxes.” Today, we could update that maxim to include death, taxes, and regulations. In an unprecedented fashion, there has been a landslide of regulations coming out of Washington that threaten our already fragile economy. According to the President’s own Office of Management and Budget, since fiscal year 2009, 162 major rules have been issued, many of these rules having an impact of $100 million or more annually on the economy. Along with the other challenges businesses face today, Washington’s red tape kills job growth and slows our recovery. For instance, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a mammoth 276-page book of rules to regulate …

@Patriot...You need to read more history. African American unemployment has been high and growing beginning in the 1980s. The U6 numbers you are quoting are actually low considering the real rate of unemployment in the African American communities. The true overall rate is somewhere around 25% and if you're a young African American male, ages between 18 and 24, the unemployment rate is closer to …   more ›
