Data shows that Wisconsin saw an increase of 35,381 private-sector jobs, a 1.5% increase, during a 12-month period ending in June. The top U.S. state saw a 12.1% increase in private-sector job creation.
Gov. Scott Walker won a recall election contested largely on economic issues, but the state ranked in the bottom 20 percent in the nation in private-sector job creation in the nation in the 12 months ending last June, according to government jobs data. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Wisconsin added just over 35,000 private-sector jobs, according to the Quarterly Census on Earnings and Wages, which covers 96% of the nation's public and private sector employers. That's a 1.5 percent increase. The 12 months of job creation data is considered by economists to be the most accurate information of hiring in the country, according to the Journal Sentinel. Despite all the furor in Madison last year over the rights of public workers, new poll says Democrats are most concerned about jobs as they head to the polls in Tuesday's recall primary election.
When tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on the Wisconsin Capitol in February and March 2011, the protests were all about Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill and how it changed collective bargaining for public employees. In fact, it was the outrage over the passage of that bill — known as Act 10 when it became law — that was the impetus for the effort to recall Walker from office. But with the Democratic primary election less than a week away, and the general recall election slated for June 5, the issue of collective bargaining has pretty much taken a back seat to jobs and other issues, according to a poll released Wednesday. Area businesses are frustrated by high taxes and Washington bureaucrats.
I appreciated this opportunity to hear from 21 local businesses who know what it means to make a payroll and develop a business plan for growth and hiring (at a roundtable discussion on jobs in Brookfield last week). I want to thank Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce for its help in identifying businesses for this unique meeting. The question of how do we — as a country — create more jobs came to Brookfield Tuesday afternoon as 15 small business leaders from the Milwaukee area met with Republican U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner. Sensenbrenner and several Republican state lawmakers who represent southeastern Wisconsin spent most of the hour-long session at the congressman's office listening to suggestions for growing business in the nation and region. The United States is falling in global competitiveness and action must be taken now.
On Tuesday, I will be holding a Job Creators Roundtable in Brookfield to discuss what Washington can do to promote private-sector job creation and growth. I want to hear directly from small business owners and job creators in the 5th Congressional District about what obstacles they face in this current economic climate and hear about solutions that Congress can pursue to infuse confidence and certainty into the economic environment. Labor Day is a day to recognize working men and women and the opportunities that make America a great place to work, raise a family, and build a life. The old adage by Benjamin Franklin goes, “The only thing certain in life is death and taxes.” Today, we could update that maxim to include death, taxes, and regulations. In an unprecedented fashion, there has been a landslide of regulations coming out of Washington that threaten our already fragile economy.
