The Week Ahead: Holiday Shopping, Playoff Football and Election Essentials

Read our summary of five things you need to know about this week in Whitefish Bay.

Be fully prepared for the week at hand in Whitefish Bay. Here are five things you must know as you go out the door today. 1. There’s an election Tuesday, in case you haven’t heard. Which means you almost have your TV-watching time back from the advertising bandits. Refer to Whitefish Bay Patch’s Election Guide for the pertinent information on voting locally. 2. The Village Board will consider a recommendation from Village Manager Patrick DeGrave to award a contract to the firm of Crispell/Snyder for development of a Storm Water Utility. The firm bid $67,100, third lowest of four bidders but the lowest of those that met requirements of the request for proposals. The board also looks at a new ordinance for regulating dangerous dogs and could…

Meet 'The Basement Bunch' on Blue Dukes' Offensive Line

The five guys who block for Whitefish Bay's high-scoring offense aren't used to getting recognition, but that doesn't mean linemen aren't people, too.

Rashadeem Gray of Whitefish Bay has 1,359 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns and a really cool nickname, “Rah-Rah.” The five offensive linemen who block for him don’t get the stats, but they have given themselves a nickname — “The Basement Bunch,” according to right guard Bobby Linneman, because they are the foundation for the offense. Gray, Linneman and the Blue Dukes (9-1) visit Brookfield East (10-0) on Friday in a WIAA Division 2, Level 3 playoff contest. The five players who toil on the offensive line for haven’t gotten the recognition that skill players such as Gray and Grant Menard do, but that changes today. Introducing: Best thing about being on the offensive line: Knowing that the points are yours, even though you don’t get your name …

Whitefish Bay Ends Messwood's Season with Decisive 37-0 Win

The Blue Dukes advance to the next round of WIAA Playoffs after cruising to an easy victory; meanwhile Messwood is proud of its season.

Whitefish Bay running back Rashadeem "RaRa" Gray's 49-yard touchdown scamper on the team's first play from scrimmage set the tone Friday night. The North Shore Conference co-champions sprinted to an easy victory over Messmer-Shorewood 37-0 in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 football playoffs. The two teams met on the football field for the first time in 11 years after playing nearly every year for 67. With Friday night’s win, the Blue Dukes (8-1) advance to play Brookfield Central (5-4) either Oct. 26 or 27 at a time and place to be determined later. The Blue Dukes stuck to their bread and butter — the ground attack — for much of the first half, splitting carries among Gray, and running backs Julian Posey and Jaren Walker. After …

It isn't what did god do wrong, it is that a public school should not become entangled with religion. No matter how small the issue, a jewish, buddhist, muslim, or athiest player/student at Shorewood may not want to be associated with christian symbol and should not have to. The parents who requested that the cross be removed may not like religion, or christianity and sent their kid to a public …   more ›

Messmer President: We Will Not Compromise or Change What We Believe or Who We Are

Br. Bob Smith, president of Messmer Catholic Schools, discusses the Messmer-Shorewood helmet insignia issue.

Editor's Note: Br. Bob Smith is the President of Messmer Catholic Schools. The views in this letter are his own and not in anyway representative of the views of Patch or its staff. In the days following the news related to the Messmer-Shorewood helmet logo issue, I have spent many hours thinking about a lot of things. My cell and school phones have been flooded with calls and text messages and numerous citizens and alumni have stopped to offer their thoughts on the issue. Our story has received local, national and international media coverage, which speaks to the importance of this issue. As a Christian, an educator and the President of Messmer Catholic Schools, I write so that in a very clear and specific way, people know exactly what I …

Whitefish Bay Keeps Rolling in WIAA Football Playoffs

Blue Dukes have 472 yards of total offense in 40-21 victory over Brookfield East.

For more than three quarters, Whitefish Bay was in control. But after Brookfield East’s Michael Amato ran his second kickoff return for a touchdown with 10 minutes 54 seconds left, the Blue Dukes saw a 23-point halftime lead dwindle to 12. And the host Spartans felt the momentum switching their way. But a 70-play drive culminating with a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Grant Menard to tight end Jackson Weber on fourth down midway in the final period put an end to any comeback talk. The Blue Dukes defeated East, 40-21, to advance to the third round of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs. Whitefish Bay, with a 7-4 record, will face No. 3 Waterford at 7 p.m. Friday at home. Statistically, the game was no contest. The Blue Dukes gained 324 …
