The success of the beer garden is sparking discussion among county officials of two more in the parks system.
Updated Wednesday 10:46 a.m. with clarifications from Milwaukee County Executive Office spokesperson Brendan Conway Milwaukee County plans to start the bidding process next year to bring two more beer gardens to the parks system after a successful first summer in Estabrook Park netted it $65,000. The County would have one beer garden built on the west or northwest side and another built on the south side, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Specific sites were not identified. Under the Estabrook agreement with restaurateur Hans Weisgerber III, the county received 20 percent of beer sales and 10 percent of food sales. The beer garden along the Milwaukee River has garnered some international attention, after debuting just this summer.
The Estabrook Park Beer Garden debuted this summer to fanfare, but is moving on to higher acclaim, being recently named to a list of the "Top 10 Beer Gardens in the World." The park's beer garden, which anchors the Milwaukee River, placed fourth in the world behind three German gardens in the Huffington Post’s Top 10 list, compiled from Cheapflights.com. Come hoist a cold glass stein and experience the best kept secret in Estabrook Park before the official grand opening on June 20.
The tall blue and white flags that say “Hofbrau” guide you through Estabrook Park to the newest spot in the county — a sun-dappled juncture of many surprisingly-delightful amenities. Beer is now flowing at the Biergarten in Estabrook Park, noon to 9 p.m. daily, weather permitting, with the park closing at 10 p.m. The official opening is June 20, when you’ll be able to go inside the newly refurbished building, as well. The Old German Beer Hall has the contract to create this experience for a year, according to manager, Steve Schultz, and they are independently finishing out the inside of the service building.
