Thefts From Vehicles Drops With Recent Arrests

Police have apprehended suspects that may be responsible for the recent spree of thefts from unlocked cars across the village.

Two weeks ago, on a Friday night when a dozen vehicles were entered, a Whitefish Bay police officer responded to a resident's call about a suspicious man on Woodruff Avenue. After arriving in the area, the police officer saw a man walk up several driveways in the 4800 block of Elkhart Avenue to look into vehicles. In one driveway, the man seemed to find something that caught his interest, so he opened the driver's door, got in the vehicle and started rummaging through the center console.  The officer then arrested the man at gunpoint at 11:46 p.m. on Nov. 9. The 20-year-old Milwaukee man told the officer he was looking for change because he was homeless and hungry. Before he was arrested, he told officers that he looked into about 20 cars…

More Than a Dozen Vehicles Entered Friday Night

Twelve vehicles were hit on Bay Ridge and Kent avenues, but police did catch a suspect entering a car on Elkhart Avenue during the same time period.

More than a dozen vehicles were entered overnight Friday in the west end of Whitefish Bay. The good news is Whitefish Bay police were able to catch one man in the act. According to Whitefish Bay police reports, an officer caught a 20-year-old Milwaukee man walking into yards, looking in vehicles, and eventually entering a vehicle parked in a driveway in the 4800 block of North Elkhart Avenue at 11:53 p.m. Friday. The man was arrested for theft, receiving stolen property and loitering. Whitefish Bay Police Chief Michael Young, who was sworn in today, said the department is investigating the suspect's potential link to other recent auto entries in the village, including 12 auto entries over the weekend on Bay Ridge Avenue and Kent Avenue:

Maybe if we declared an unlocked car containing valuables an "attractive nuisance" we could fine the owners accordingly for the costs associated with having the police department deal with the "thefts".   more ›
