The Blue Dukes qualified for the state tournament in 10 events after a strong performance in Thursday night's sectional meet.
Although Whitefish Bay's track and field team is placed in one of the tougher WIAA sectionals, the team advanced 10 events to state in Thursday's meet at Menomonee Falls. The Blue Dukes took third in the boys meet and sixth in the girls. Arrowhead won both divisions. The following athletes are headed to the state tournament in Lacrosse, according to WisSports.net: Threats, who easily won the 200 meter and was part of the 800-meter relay, said he expects to have a strong showing at state, as well. Emma-Lisa Murphy led the long-distance events, while Sofie Yang took first in pole vault and Hannah Schwartz won high jump. The boys finished third in the conference meet.
For the second year in a row, the Whitefish Bay girls track team has established itself as the best in the North Shore Conference. The girls significantly outplaced their nearest rivals, Germantown, with 118 points to the Warhawks' 100 points. Senior Emma-Lisa Murphy led the girls squad, winning the the one-mile race with a time of 5:07 and the two-mile race with a time of 11:42. Other Whitefish Bay girls also excelled in the two-mile race, including sophomore Alana Blegen's third place finish (12:28) and junior Jenna Wirkus' fourth place showing (12:33). Emma-Lisa Murphy signs letter of intent to join UW's track and cross country teams.
Emma-Lisa Murphy, Whitefish Bay's top cross country runner, said she has always seen herself as a Wisconsin Badger, and now, she has confirmed she will run with the Division 1 cross country and track squads after graduation. "I’ve just always seen myself as a Badger, staying in the state of Wisconsin," the senior said. "I really connected with the coach (UW's Jim Stintzi). I see a lot of my high school coach in him. He’ll really help me achieve the next level I’m looking for." She signed her letter of intent to run with UW's track and cross country teams Wednesday.
