Black Friday must have gotten a little crowded at Bayshore Town Center. Whitefish Bay police received reports of shoppers removing 'no parking' signs in the 5700 block of Lydell Avenue at about 10:30 a.m. Friday. Police did not see who removed the signs, but they did have to place some of them back in the ground. Eight vehicles were illegally parked on the block. In other Whitefish Bay police news:

Thanksgiving has all but disappeared from the major media landscape. The Halloween candy wasn't even down to only Smarties when Christmas trees appeared in stores. Black Friday sales didn't even wait for Friday this year. There were several retailers who decided to bump up the rush by opening the doors Thanksgiving night. Walmart's Black Friday deals started at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving, according to the Journal Sentinel. And Target stores opened at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving, according to Bloomburg Business Week. In 2011, sales were estimated to be $11.4 million—a 6.6 percent increase over 2010—according to a CNN report on Black Friday sales. Black Friday brings out shoppers on a cold and windy November day.
Customers began lining up at Bayshore Town Center early as 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving to take advantage of discounts on electronics items at the mall's Sears store. While Sears opened at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the rest of the retail center wasn't open for business until 7 a.m. on Friday. Morning foot traffic was light, but steady as shoppers ventured out despite the cold and windy weather.
It's Black Friday, and that means great deals—and huge crowds. What makes it worth the wait for you this year?

With Thanksgiving occurring on the earliest possible day this year, the official holiday shopping season is as long as it can be. For years, the Friday following Thanksgiving — Black Friday — was the unquestioned king of that season. But the furious growth of the Internet has spawned Cyber Monday, an online shopping frenzy that grew 22 percent from 2010 to $1.25 billion in sales in the United States. The major retail destination extends hours beginning on Black Friday, but Kohl's gets started earlier. Like now.
Not everyone is waiting until Black Friday to launch the holiday shopping season. At Bayshore Town Center, the official tree lighting is 6 p.m. Nov. 16 — but Kohl’s is even weeks ahead of that launch at the North Shore’s largest shopping destination. The retailer’s Bayshore location started holiday hours on Sunday, Oct. 28. The store is open until 11 p.m. through Nov. 3 then gets started in earnest Nov. 7. Kohl’s is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Nov. 7-8, then 7 a.m. to midnight Nov. 9-10. More holiday hours are posted on the store’s front door through Nov. 17. Looking for good deals without the big crowds, many shoppers hit their local business districts.
While hundreds of North Shore shoppers descended on Bayshore Town Center Friday, just a few blocks away sisters Joan Colman and Breta Landy chatted as they walked down Silver Spring Drive, peeking in store windows of small merchants and reading window signs promising special deals for Black Friday. "Instead of fighting the crowds at Bayshore, we decided to come here and have a leisurely walk," said Colman, a Whitefish Bay resident. "We're just meandering around and looking in different stores." The business districts of the North Shore were not overrun Friday, but merchants said they had many customers who came in looking for discounts without having to battle the crowds. Smartphones are becoming an ever-larger weapon in the Black Friday shopper’s arsenal. According to the annual Deloitte Holiday Survey of spending and trends, 27 percent of smartphone owners plan to use their devices to search for store locations, compare prices and check product availability.
