Christmas Service Times in Whitefish Bay

A local guide to Christmas services or those who are not regular church-goers or forgot to read this week's church bulletin.

The Christmas tree is up, the lights are hung and the presents are wrapped — perhaps it's time to take a look at the other side of the holiday and the real meaning behind Christmas. Churches in Whitefish Bay have a number of Christmas services scheduled  — here's a list of some locations and times: United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay: On Christmas Eve, the church will hold communion worship at noon, a children's service (especially for preschool children) at 4 p.m., a children's candlelight service (especially for elementary-aged children) at 6 p.m., a student-led candlelight service at 8 p.m. and a chancel choir-led candlelight service at 10 p.m. St. Monica Parish: On Christmas Eve, the church will hold Mass at 5 p.m., with the …

Churches Cope with Changing Times

With many parishioners donating less, churches work to keep up charitable giving in a time of need.

In a time of crisis, Bay Shore Lutheran Church Pastor Norene Smith said people do one of two things: They engage more than ever, or they disappear. With Americans still feeling the effects of the last recession, and some economists predicting a second recession on the horizon, a feeling of crisis has crept under people, dismantling habits that reach beyond the grocery store and into places of worship.     Communities of faith, traditionally a vital piece of America’s safety net, are facing new challenges as leaders turn to their congregations and find that some of their previous benefactors now need help. The prices at the United Methodist "pumpkin patch" sale shown in the photos were outrageous. The most expensive pumpkins were $40??? They must have forgotten about competition because for that much you can buy 10 pumpkins at the other pumpkin vendors. Obviously this year it was more about raising donations than the actual "selling" of the pumpkins.   more ›
