The volunteer-run group announced this week it has opened its first official headquarters since its inception in 2004. It has set up shop at 325 E. Silver Spring Dr., above the Irina's Kitchen restaurant near Bayshore Town Center.

Local progressive political group Grassroots Northshore has found a new home. The volunteer-run organization announced this week it has opened its first official headquarters since its inception in 2004. It has set up shop at 325 W. Silver Spring Dr., above the Irina's Kitchen restaurant near Bayshore Town Center.  "For years we have operated out of people's homes, church basements and makeshift campaign headquarters," the group said in an email to members on Monday. "As of last week, thanks to the dedication of our steering committee, GRNS now has a home." The group has more than 1,000 members from several North Shore communities including Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Glendale and Fox Point. The new headquarters will serve as a geographical …

Might want to correct the address too, Adam. 325 E Silver Spring is the Aurora Healthcare Facility just east of Santa Monica. The building containing Irina's Kitchen is at 325 W Silver Spring.   more ›

Bay Students 'Spread the Word to End the Word'

Students in Whitefish Bay High School's Best Buddies program held a dancing flash mob performance at the Bayshore Town Center Sunday as part of its "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign.

While other students at Whitefish Bay High School are preparing for senior prom, a group of students in Whitefish Bay's Best Buddies program have been busy organizing a flash mob-like performance to promote the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign. Chelsea Hren, Best Buddies Wisconsin Lead Program Coordinator, said Best Buddies works with people with disabilities to help them in their life and in their job. The program was introduced to Whitefish Bay High School last year. “In a school program, a student with a disability will be paired with a student without a disability and they'll do activities like go bowling, go to the movies, and have a Halloween party," Hren said. The Best Buddies program and the “Spread the Word to End the …

Santorum Signs On to Event That Puts National Group's Focus on Wisconsin

But 'Defending the American Dream Summit' this weekend is about mobilizing the troops and educating citizens as Wisconsin's election season gets under way, organizers say.

A key national conservative organization will point a bright spotlight on southeastern Wisconsin Saturday in a daylong event boasting a potent lineup of Republican politicians, pundits and at least one presidential candidate. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, along with U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, lead the speaking lineup for the "Defending the American Dream Summit" in Milwaukee. Fox News contributor and columnist Michelle Malkin, and radio host and political commentator Tony Katz also will appear in the event at the Wyndham Hotel, 4747 S. Howell Ave., hosted by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation – Wisconsin. Santorum's presence here just a week-and-a half before Wisconsin's presidential …

@Mau -- your husband really doesn't know if he's anemic, has unsuspected high blood sugar, or has a cancer starting unless he gets checked out every so often. It's sensible to catch problems early.   more ›

Local Progressive Group Grows in Wake of Wisconsin's Political Unrest

With recalls trending in the state and activists looking to volunteer more than ever, Grassroots Northshore has become a significant voice in Shorewood.

Considering the state of politics in Wisconsin — emotionally charged recall efforts across the state, an open U.S. Senate seat and a looming presidential election — it's no wonder the all-volunteer, local progressive group Grassroots Northshore has seen its membership swell to more than 1,000. “Let’s face it, Scott Walker has been very good for business,” Grassroots Northshore founder Keith Schmitz joked. "People are sort of looking for a vehicle to push back." A primary driver of a failed earlier this year, the group is once again hitting the sidewalks and canvassing the North Shore for recall petition signatures. Grassroots Northshore is one of hundreds of groups around the state organizing efforts to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker …
