Community Members Present Complaint to Sen. Johnson and Obstructionist Allies

Constituents will gather Jan. 30, outside of the Social Security Administration office in downtown Milwaukee to present Republican legislators with a "people's citation."

MILWAUKEE - Constituents will gather Jan. 30, outside of the Social Security Administration office in downtown Milwaukee to present Senator Ron Johnson and Representatives Ryan, Duffy, Sensenbrenner, and Ribble with a “people’s citation” for reckless endangerment of the U.S. economy and for conspiring to de-fund essential social programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Extremists Republicans, like Paul Ryan, are putting our economy at risk by demanding austerity at a time when we need economic stimulation more than ever. GOP extremists have continued to play politics around issues like the “fiscal cliff,” “debt ceiling,” and “sequester” in order to dismantle vital social programs.

One speaker attending the event, Robin Squier, is a retired teacher and one of millions of Americans currently receiving Social Security benefits. She’s worried about the upcoming automatic cuts (the “sequester”) set to go into effect March 1st. “Proposals to replace the sequester with cuts to other important services - like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security - would only cost us jobs and put people like me at risk,” she said.

The legislators will be urged to grow - not slow - the economy by investing in good jobs and closing corporate tax loopholes instead of cutting vital services.

Wednesday’s action in Milwaukee is one of more than 50 cities nationwide that are kicking off a month of intensive activity leading up to the March 1st deadline.
