Klode Park Goes Organic With Fundraising Help

Donations are being collected to improve Klode Park's turf quality without the use of pesticides.

A fundraiser is underway to finance sustainable turf practices at Klode Park this summer.

As part of the Whitefish Bay’s turf management plan, Healthy Communities Project has partnered with the village and the Whitefish Bay Garden Club to implement a pesticide-free, sustainable turf project at Klode Park.

The village has reallocated a portion of the former pesticide budget toward turf maintenance, and the Garden Club has committed to maintaining the western flower beds and tennis court fence lines without pesticides.

Healthy Communities Project has committed to coordinating two organic fertilizer applications and raising an additional $5,000 by September 1 to cover the cost of sustainable turf practices such as core aeration, over-seeding and compost/mineral amendments.

Unlike pesticides, which pose a risk to public health and the environment and deplete the soil, sustainable turf care builds the soil and turf system at every step, said Healthy Communities Project co-founder Amy Joyce.

"Every dollar spent is an investment in improved public health and improved soil, air and water quality," Joyce said. "Sustainably managed turf holds more water, which leads to improved storm water management as well."

If you would like to contribute to the Klode Park Sustainable Turf Project, you can make a tax deductible donation to The Healthy Communities Project through its fiscal Agent, the Urban Ecology Center.

Checks can be made payable to the Urban Ecology Center and mailed to Healthy Communities Project, P.O. Box 170652, Whitefish Bay, WI  53217. Include Healthy Communities Project in the check’s memo section.
