More than 600 runners came out to support Whitefish Bay schools in the annual 5k run/walk event.

More than 600 people came out to Whitefish Bay High School Saturday morning for the sixth annual Run the Bay, a 5k run/walk organized by the Whitefish Bay Public Education Foundation to raise money for the schools.Β

Participants ran individually, with familes and strollers, and in groups. A team of school district employees ran together in support of Middle School Associate Principal Chuck Orvold's battle against cancer.

David Salmon, a Shorewood High School cross country alumnus training for the Lakefront Marathon, won the race (and a $25 Performance Runnning Outfitters gift card) with a time of β€Ž16:55.08.

This year was the first year the race was timed. Salmon told his mom, Liz Nelson, he came with the goal of finishing first.

β€Ž"The kid says, 'Mom, I'm going to win it and I'm going to run a good time. Mom says, 'I believe you will, David.' And he did. Lesson for the day: you gotta set goals to achieve them," Nelson said.

The day also included a sports rummage sale that benefitted Duke Pride athletic boosters and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. Whitefish Bay Patch provided lawn games and free picnic lunch.
