Whitefish Bay Rugby Takes Third at State Tourney

Coming off their Division 2 championship last season, the Whitefish Bay Berserkers Rugby Club moved up to Division 1 this season and finished second in Badgerland Conference play with a 5-1 record.

On May 23rd, the Berserkers traveled to Fond du Lac for a playoff game and defeated the Valley Crusaders 45-5 to win a spot in the State Championship round.

They entered the state tournament on June 1 as a number 3 seed and met Nicolet in the semi-final game. Despite losing 27-12 in a rain-soaked match, the Berserkers rebounded nicely and beat perennial powerhouse Pulaski on their home field 17-5 to finish third place in the D1 state tournament.

At the rugby banquet last week, the following awards were presented:

  • Surprise Player of the Year: Whitefish Bay senior Joey Davey
  • Forward of the Year: Whitefish Bay junior Dane Fleck
  • Back of the Year: Whitefish Bay senior Dan Pettay
  • Most Valuable Player: Whitefish Bay senior Will Shanley
