Whitefish Bay Resident Markgraf Joins State Department Sports Program

The longtime U.S. women's soccer standout is wrapping up a four-day soccer camp in Ethiopia designed to foster greater understanding through sports.

Whitefish Bay resident Kate Markgraf is concluding a trip to Ethiopia as part of a U.S. State Department program designed to connect people through sports.

Markgraf, who played a remarkable 201 matches with the U.S. women’s soccer team, is in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia as part of a four-day Youth Culture, Sport and Friendship Camp, according to the U.S. Soccer website.

The camp is aimed at exchanging cultural traditions and promoting healthy living through sport and education, and the athletes work with young people ages 13-20.

Markgraf, who was a member of the famous 1999 Women’s World Cup team, retired in 2010.

Also representing the United States on this trip is another soccer player with local ties. Tony Sanneh was a member of the 2002 U.S. World Cup team and played in college at UW-Milwaukee.
