Nate Gomoll Will Run With Marquette Next Year

The Whitefish Bay senior committed to run cross country and track with the Golden Eagles next school year.

Hard work and dedication has paid off for Whitefish Bay senior Nate Gomoll, who signed a letter of intent on Friday to run cross country and track with the Marquette Golden Eagles after graduation.

Gomoll, who is on the high honor roll at Bay, received academic and athletic scholarships to study engineering and run cross country and track at Marquette.

"I took five visits to five different schools, and it really came down to the fact that I really fit in with the guys on the team," he said. "The coach is young, and he knows what he's doing. I felt like it was the right place to be."

Whitefish Bay cross country coach Mike Miller said Gomoll's hard work has led him to make steady improvement year after year.

Gomoll placed 19th at state his junior year and seventh his senior year. He placed eighth in the one-mile event his junior year, and he has high hopes of topping that in the upcoming track season.

Gomoll was first team all state in cross country this year and in track last year. He won the conference cross country meet in his junior and senior seasons. In his junior year, he won the mile event and took second in the two-mile.

"He works really hard and both the guys and girls on the team just love him," Miller said. "He's really made a huge impact here at Whitefish Bay. We're all going to miss him a lot, but he's going to Marquette, which is close by and is going to be a good fit with engineering and running."

Miller said Gomoll led quietly by example, showing his teammates that hard work and dedication can lead to big results. Gomoll's influence has rubbed off on the younger teammates, Miller said.

"All the things he's done by his leadership will leave a lasting impression on the younger people on this team," he said. "That's a torch they will have to carry now."
