Girls Golf Team Headed to State

The young varsity squad qualified after finishing second in a sectional match earlier this week.

The Whitefish Bay girls golf team is headed to the state tournament.

The Blue Dukes qualified for the state tournament after finishing second in the sectional at Wanaki Golf Course this past Monday. Last week the team finished first in a regional qualifier at Silver Spring Country Club.

The state golf championships will be held on Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.

The Blue Dukes has a young varsity squad this year, with one senior, four juniors and three sophomores. Since the bulk of the team will be back next year, Coach Frank Donadio said he sees the state tournament trip as more of a learning experience than anything else.

"Obviously our goal at state is to play as well as we can, but it will be mostly a learning experience for the returning players for next year, as we realize many of the other qualifying teams throughout the state had finished well ahead of us in early season invitationals," Donadio said.

The Blue Dukes girls also won the North Shore Conference Final at Mee Kwon Golf Course on Sept. 25, clinching the team's first conference championship since 2008, when the team was a co-op with Shorewood. This is the first Whitefish Bay-only team to win a conference title.

Earlier in the season, the team won its first conference nine hole mini-meet, and then finished second to defending state champion Homestead in the second mini- meet. The team won the next two mini-meets leading up to the 18-hole conference final.

Junior Robinson Creighton and junior Caroline Matkom made First Team All Conference. Three players made Second Team All Conference: senior Annie Letizia and sophomores Clare Matkom and Grace Wirth.
