Blue Dukes Prepare for Second Round of Playoffs

Whitefish Bay will play Brookfield Central in the second round of the Division 2 WIAA playoffs at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lubar Stadium in Whitefish Bay.

Ten Milwaukee Patch-area high school football teams are hoping to extend their 2012 seasons with second-round WIAA postseason match-ups.

Here are all matchups involving Patch teams, and at least one thing we think you should know about each game.

Division 1

(3) Hamilton (7-2) at (2) Verona (8-1), 7 p.m. Friday

How Hamilton got here: The Chargers defeated Middleton, 44-9, last weekend.

Fast fact: Hamilton’s Drew Patterson needs 203 rushing yards to reach the elusive 2,000-yard plateau this fall, something only Crandon’s Hayden Krueger (2,006) has done so far this season.

(4) Kenosha Bradford (6-3) at (1) Oak Creek (9-0) 7 p.m., Friday

How Oak Creek got here: The Knights remained undefeated by beating Milwaukee Hamilton, 63-0, in the first round.

Fast fact: Only three Patch-area players have rushed for more yards than Oak Creek senior Virgil Hammond, who with 1,279 yards, ranks behind only the aforementioned Patterson and Racine St. Catherine’s Sean Madden (1,537).

(3) Menomonee Falls (7-2) at (2) Kimberly (8-1), 7 p.m. Friday

How Falls got here: The Indians edged Appleton East, 20-17.

Fast fact: Kimberly quarterback Ben Diedrick is one of five finalists for the Dave Krieg Award, given by wissports.net to the top senior passer in the state. Through nine games, he’s thrown 25 touchdowns.

Division 2

(3) Watertown (8-1) at (7) Waukesha West (5-4), 4 p.m. Saturday

How West got here: The Wolverines handed Waterford its first loss of the season, 14-12, in the first round.

Fast fact: No one in the state has thrown for more touchdowns (31) or yards (2,482) than Watertown senior Tarek Yaeggi.

(1) Brookfield East (9-0) at (5) Greendale (6-3), 7 p.m. Friday

How East got here: The Spartans advanced with an easy 62-7 win over Bradley Tech on Friday.

How Greendale got here: Two weeks after losing to Wauwatosa West, the Panthers beat the Trojans, 41-16, Friday.

Fast facts: Of the seven playoff qualifiers in the Woodland Conference, only Greendale and Pewaukee survived round one of the playoffs, and Greendale and Pewaukee beat fellow Woodland teams to advance. … Conversely, all four Greater Metro Conference playoff-qualifying teams, including the Lancers, moved on to Level 2.

(3) Brookfield Central (6-3) at (2) Whitefish Bay (8-1), 4 p.m. Saturday, Lubar Stadium in Whitefish Bay

How Central got here: The Lancers handled South Milwaukee, 39-8, in the first round.

How Bay got here: The Blue Dukes put an end to Messmer/Shorewood’s memorable season with a 37-0 shutout.

Fast facts: The Blue Dukes are trying to make it to the third round for the second straight season after not doing so in any of their first 10 playoff appearances. … the Lancers, on the other hand, have made it to the second round nine times in the 12 years they’ve made the playoffs.

Division 3

(3) Catholic Memorial (6-3) at (2) Pewaukee (9-0), 7 p.m. Friday

How Memorial got here: The Crusaders posted a 20-point win over Brown Deer, 48-28, Friday.

Fast fact: Senior T.J. Watt committed to Wisconsin in April, and will be the third Watt brother to play for the Badgers next fall. Derek Watt is a redshirt freshman and J.J. Watt is a standout defensive end for the NFL’s Houston Texans after he was an All-American with the Badgers.

Division 5

(3) Laconia (8-1) vs. (2) Racine St. Catherine’s (8-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Horlick Field

How St. Cat’s got here: The second-seed earned a 27-7 win over Howards Grove on Friday.

Fast fact: St. Catherine’s has not made it past the second round since 2007.
