Bay Gymnasts Aim For Third Straight Championship

After winning sectionals, the team is now headed to the state tournament this weekend to defend its Division 2 championship.

The Whitefish Bay gymnastics team will head to the state tournament this weekend with hopes of winning its fourth championship in the last five seasons and its sixth championship overall.

The Blue Dukes will advance to their 18th state team tournament after winning their sectional meet on Friday night. Freshman Mary Claire Potter finished first overall, winning the balance beam, floor exercise and uneven bars competitions. Freshman Sarah Kenlay finished third overall, tying for second in uneven bars and placing fifth in the balance beam competition.

Other highlights include junior Eileen Demet placing second in vaulting, junior Lucille Anzia placing third in balance beam and junior Paris Limberatos placing fourth in floor exercise and vaulting.

Whitefish Bay ranks second in state titles only to Waukesha West/North/South, which claims seven championships. Whitefish Bay has won five state titles, not including another two state titles from a prior Whitefish Bay-Shorewood co-op team. Also tied in second place for state titles are Brookfield Central, De Pere and River Falls.

The team lost seven seniors from last year, when Bay took its second straight state title and its third in the last four seasons.

The state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School. Whitefish Bay will compete in the Division 2 competition along with Antigo, Ashland, Mount Horeb, Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster, River Falls, River Valley, Waterford and Westby/Bangor. The individual championships will begin at 5:40 p.m. Friday. The team competition will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday
