Bay Baseball Takes First Game at State

Blue Dukes advance to WIAA semifinals.

An explosive offensive attack led Whitefish Bay over Sheboygan Falls by a count of 9-2 in a WIAA Summer Baseball State Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point.

Sheboygan Falls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Johnny Sneen. Bay’s offense quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, taking their first lead at 2-1.

The Blue Dukes hit their stride in the third, bringing all nine batters to the plate and knocking out four consecutive hits, including a Garrett DeMuth RBI double. Jackson Weber capped off a five-run inning with a two RBI single that gave Bay a 7-2 lead.

As a team, the Dukes pounded out 12 hits. Eight of their nine starters had a least one base knock.

Starting pitcher Jack Fagan settled in after a shaky opening inning and held the Falcons to five hits in six innings of work. Fagan allowed one earned run on the afternoon.

"I knew we would come out a little nervous,” said Blue Duke’s head coach Jay Wojcinski. “Jack will be the first one to admit that he was a little bit.

"But when he got through that first inning, and then the second … you could really tell he started to relax a little bit.”

Joe Florita came in and pitched a perfect seventh to lock down the win.

Wojcinski and his team may be at the state tournament for only the second time in school history, but don’t think they are going to settle for just one win.

“I told the kids, ‘I’m really happy for you and that’s all great, but we’re not going up there just to go to state, we’re going up there to win three games,’ ” said Wojcinski. “It’s definitely not a situation where we are just happy to be here.”

Bay advances to face the winner of the quarterfinal tilt between West Salem and last year’s runner-up West Bend West in semifinal number two. Inclement weather has pushed the remainder of that last quarterfinal game to Friday, 8 a.m.

The apporoximate start times of the semi-finals have not been released.
