Athletic Hall of Famers Awarded at Ceremony

John Stone, Morgan Byers, Glenn “Buzz” Wilson, Lois Wolf, Todd Wienke and Bob Albrightson were awarded in the second inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame awards ceremony.

Six Whitefish Bay alumni were honored for their athletic accomplishments at Whitefish Bay High School Saturday.

Whitefish Bay High School started its Athletic Hall of Fame last year. This year's hall of fame class includes John Stone, Morgan Byers, Glenn “Buzz” Wilson, Lois Wolf, Todd Wienke and Bob Albrightson.

Here is a brief introduction to this year's inductees:

John Stone (Athlete, Class of 1959)

John starred in basketball, baseball and track while a Blue Duke. In the 1958-59 basketball season, John was named 1st team all-state, averaged 35.5 points per game, including a 53 point game, and led the team to a 23-1 record and a number 2 ranking in the state. John was captain of the 1963 Marquette University basketball team, coached the Whitefish Bay girls’ basketball team for three seasons and was named to the All-World slow pitch softball team twice.

Morgan Byers (Coach)

Morgan began his swim coaching and math teaching career at Whitefish Bay in 1951. He was the head coach until 1970, coaching State Championship teams in 1953, 1954 and 1957. Morgan was also instrumental in creating the architectural design of the new swimming pool which was completed in 1968. After entering Purdue University at the age of 16, Morgan was an All-American in distance freestyle and placed 3rd in the 1500 freestyle at the NCAA championships in 1945.

Glenn “Buzz” Wilson (Athlete, Class of 1950)

Buzz excelled in football, basketball and track while attending Whitefish Bay. As an All-State quarterback, he led the Blue Dukes to two conference championships. In track, Buzz was both a Conference and State champion in the high hurdles and high jump. He helped the track team win State Championships in 1948, 1949 and 1950. Buzz played football at the University of Wisconsin, quarterbacked his Marine base team to two Marine Corps championships and signed a contract, but never played, with the Green Bay Packers.

Lois Wolf (Distinguished Contributor/Coach)

Lois coached the girls track team from 1972-1988 and coached at least two individual state champions and numerous other state qualifiers. Most importantly, Lois was active in promoting girls’ sports long before the passage of Title IX. Prior to the start of girls’ interscholastic sports, Lois organized “sports days” to provide girls’ teams their only opportunities to compete against girls from other schools. Lois started teaching Physical Education at Richards School in 1958 before moving to the high school in 1972.

Todd Wienke (Athlete, Class of 1983)

Todd is arguably the greatest distance runner in Whitefish Bay High School history. He set the school records in the indoor mile, the indoor two-mile, the outdoor mile and the outdoor two-mile, all of which still stand. Todd finished in 3rd place at the State Cross Country Meet in 1982 and then finished 2nd in the mile and 3rd in the two-mile at the 1983 State Track Meet. Todd was a scholarship runner at the University of Colorado, earning All-Conference honors six times and achieving All-American status in cross country.

Bob Albrightson (Coach)

Bob started his 27-year teaching and coaching career at Whitefish Bay in 1967. He was the head football coach for fourteen years, with his teams winning one conference championship in 1972 and finishing in 2nd place four times. Bob was inducted in to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. He has authored numerous articles on topics related to high school sports, competition and coaching. Bob has taught coaching classes at Marquette University for over 15 years.
