The pumpkins are coming….to the library!

Halloween is right around the corner, and so is the tradition of the Whitefish Bay Great Pumpkin Festival. The festival runs from Wednesday, October 23 through Sunday, October 27 from 6-9pm each night. The pumpkins are located right across the street from the library in Old Schoolhouse Park.

While checking out the display of jack-o-lanterns, swing by the library and listen to some scary stories on Wednesday, October 23 at 7pm when Chad Lewis will tell us about Wisconsin’s Most Haunted Places.  From phantom creatures prowling the woods to graveyard apparitions located in your own backyard, no place in Wisconsin is without its own haunting. Complete with photos, case histories, eyewitness accounts, ghost lore, and directions, this family friendly presentation encourages you to visit these places for your own ghost story.

Continue the Halloween spirit and join us for children’s Pumpkin Story Time and Craft on Saturday, October 26 at 10am. No registration is required for this story time.

Enjoy reading about things that go bump in the night? Here are some of my favorite scary reads:
  • “Heart-Shaped Box” by Joe Hill. Rock star Judas Coyne buys a haunted object from an online auction site. Hill is the son of Stephen King, and some of the imagery in this book was really frightening.
  • “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman. This book, about a boy living in a cemetery, is creepy and unsettling, and is a great choice for those wanting something spooky but not terrifying.  It is a children’s book, but don’t let that stop you from reading it.
  • “The Passage” by Justin Cronin. What happens when the lights go out, and a military experiment gone wrong escapes? This one had me keeping the lights on at night.
  • “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. A classic, but rightfully so.  I love vampire stories, and this tale is still one of the best.
