The Final Hurdle: Bay Gymnastics Eyes State Title Defense
Blue Dukes cruised to sectional crown on Friday with a better team score than the one that captured Division 2 state in 2011. Here's a look ahead to this week's state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.
A dominating victory on Friday in the WIAA Division 2 girls gymnastics sectional set up the Whitefish Bay team perfectly to defend their state championship.
Last year, the with a score of 142.167. They easily eclipsed that score in this year's sectional round, posting 143.325 — 16 points more than runner-up Waterford. It was the best score among Division 2 teams in all sectionals
Individual competition is Friday night in Wisconsin Rapids, with the team competition on Saturday.

River Falls, a perennial power in Division 2, scored 142.100 in its sectional and could be the biggest challenger. Two other teams reached 140 in the sectional round — Holmen and Mount Horeb.
Maggie Anderson led a 2-3-4 finish in the sectional all-around with a score of 35.925. Kelly Danek was third with a 35.825, and Lucille Anzia was fourth with a 34.75. Other Whitefish Bay qualifiers for the individual events include:

Beam: Anzia took first at sectional with a 9.4, Sofie Yang was second with a 9.25, Danek was third with an 8.825, and Anderson was fourth with an 8.875.
Floor: Anderson won first with a 9.675, Danek was third with a 9.35, and Tory Patek was fifth with a 9.050.
Vault: Anderson was second with a 9.2, Danek was third with a 9.025, Tessa Hansen was fourth with a 9.0, and Anzia was fifth with an 8.825.
Bars: Yang was second with an 8.725, Danek was third with a 8.625, Patek was 4th with an 8.35 and Anderson was fifth with an 8.275.
