Scout Believes in Giving Back to the Community

High school junior spent more than 400 hours landscaping Armory Park as part of Eagle Scout project.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Whitefish Bay Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Editor Jeff Rumage.

Here's our first Whiz Kid:

  • Name: Matthew Frick, 16
  • School: Whitefish Bay High School
  • Accomplishments:  Became an Eagle Scout in September 2010. As one of his final steps to becoming an Eagle Scout, he designed and landscaped the Veterans Memorial and Gardens at Armory Park in Whitefish Bay. Working with project managers John Kearns and Jim French, Matthew spent 72 hours planning the project and an additional 377 hours on the site working with fellow scouts and volunteers associated with Troop 400.

He said it was a very enriching experience to learn how to organize and lead a large group project.  In addition to his interest in Boy Scouts, he has also been actively involved in Whitefish Bay High School activities, such as the varsity ski team, volleyball, baseball, pole vaulting on the track team, golf team, Mock Trial and playing trumpet in the band.

Outside of school, he plays the bugles in his scout troop and participates in his church youth group and Scholastic Clay Pigeon Trapshooting.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Matthew thanked his family for their support: "My family, including my older sister Leah and my parents Bob and Carolyn, have been very supportive of all my adventures and advancements with scouts.   They have been a very big help and influence who have made it possible for me to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

"With my father, Bob, as my troop Scoutmaster, together we  have enjoyed many opportunities to camp in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico (where we backpacked and hiked over 108 miles in a 11 day overnight adventure in the mountains of New Mexico), camping year round including the February winter Klondike at Camp Vista."
  • Other Activities: Matthew enjoys fishing, camping, woodworking, boating, sailing, snow skiing and water skiing.

"I'm enjoying my time in high school and it makes me happy to see all the wonderful people who make numerous activities possible for us youth to enjoy as we grow up in Whitefish Bay," he said.
