Patch Full-Court Press: Port Washington at Whitefish Bay Basketball

Girls and boys play varsity doubleheader, and Patch will have complete coverage and then some.

North Shore Conference rivals Port Washington and Whitefish Bay play a girls and boys varsity basketball doubleheader on Friday, and Patch brings its Full-Court Press to the Blue Dukes Field House.

Action begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls game. The first class of the Whitefish Bay Athletic Hall of Fame is inducted between games, with the boys game to begin about 7:30.

Previewing the Girls Game

Whitefish Bay (15-2, 9-1 North Shore Conference) is ranked No. 4 in the state in Division 2. The Blue Dukes’ only losses have come to Division 1 teams, . Coach Greg Capper’s team continues to play excellent defense, as only Nicolet (40 points) and Tosa West (41) have managed at least 40 points against his team. Maya Jonas and Lyndsey Agnew are the top scorers at 11.9 and 10.7 points per game, respectively, according to WisSports.net.

The Pirates lost to Whitefish Bay 44-23 back on Dec. 20. Port Washington (4-11, 2-8 North Shore Conference) lost 10 consecutive games before topping Milwaukee Lutheran and then Homestead in back-to-back efforts. According to WisSports.net, Caity Tydrick leads the team in scoring at 9 points per game.

Previewing the Boys Game

The year after winning the WIAA Division 2 state title, the Blue Dukes (12-5, 7-3 NSC) are having another strong year. Among their five losses are two to Division 1 No. 1 Germantown and a pair of 1-point defeats, to Milwaukee South and Homestead.

They won 71-55 at Port Washington back on Dec. 20. Leading the team in scoring, according to WisSports.net, is Kelin Johnson at 14.4 points per game.

Port Washington (8-10, 4-6 North Shore Conference) made a surprising run in the Division 2 tournament last year as well, but has hit a rough patch through the middle of this season. The Pirates have lost three in a row and eight of 10, beginning with the defeat to Whitefish Bay. Joey Burbach has emerged as a solid scorer at 16.4 points per game.
