New Tennis Courts Won Through Community's Generosity

Cumberland Elementary School students are starting the school year with a special treat: new tennis courts.

The three Cumberland School courts, originally built in the 1940s, are now able to be used again for the first time in many years due to a renovation. The reconstruction was made possible with $128,000 in donations, including a $50,000 donation made on behalf of Jeffrey Hayes.

Cumberland Principal Jayne Heffron thanked the Hayes family and the many other donors at a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday afternoon. She also recognized the tennis court renovation committee, which consisted of Laura Emory, Amy Lukas, Jane Meulendyke, Katie Smith and Christina Reimers.

The blue courts have special court lines designed to scale the game to a child’s age and size. Now, tennis will once again be incorporated into the school's physical education classes, thanks to the child-sized racquets, balls, and nets donated by the Wisconsin Tennis Association.
