Laura Myrah Appointed Interim Superintendent

The Whitefish Bay School Board has appointed the district's director of curriculum and instruction to temporarily fill the role currently held by Mary Gavigan.

Laura Myrah, the director of curriculum and instruction for the Whitefish Bay School District, has been appointed to serve as the interim superintendent of the school district.

Current Superintendent Mary Gavigan announced earlier this month that she intends to resign, as she has accepted the position of executive director of CESA #1. Myrah will temporarily fill the position on July 1.

Myrah has served as the district's director of curriculum and instruction for four years. She previously served as an elementary school principal in the Elmbrook School District and West Bend Joint School District and a coordinator for gifted and talented education and an elementary and middle school teacher in the Port Washington–Saukville School District.

Myrah has spoken on educational initiatives and has written professional journal articles and monthly columns, as well as a book, The Brain Compatible Classroom – Using What We Know About Learning to Improve Teaching (ASCD 2003).

In a news release, Whitefish Bay School Board President Pam Woodard said Myrah’s current leadership position with the district and her previous experiences make her well-suited to provide continuity and vision for the school district.

"Ms. Myrah’s rich background in educational research and effective practice, her passion for students and learning, and her demonstrated leadership within our district will help the School District of Whitefish Bay move forward consistent with its areas of focus and state-wide initiatives,” Woodard said.

Myrah received an elementary education degree from Concordia University Wisconsin, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University, and an educational specialist degree equivalency in school administration through St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Gavigan, who has served as superintendent for three years, said Whitefish Bay schools are in good hands with Myrah.

“Laura Myrah is a strong leader with a vision of education that complements the district’s beliefs and strategic direction," she said. "She also leads with balance and integrity, addressing issues with sensitivity, tact, and skill, while respecting differing points of view.”

Myrah said she looks forward to the new responsibilities of the position.

“Our school district is truly an exceptional place to learn." she said. "I look forward to building on my existing relationship with students, staff, parents, and community members to not only continue our tradition of excellence but to enhance and expand it. I am enthused and proud to serve our district as interim superintendent."
