Kara Harmon Named Associate Principal at Whitefish Bay High School

The former high school English teacher said she is excited to stay in the school district she loves, while continuing to teach outside of the classroom.

Whitefish Bay High School's new associate principal is already a familiar face around the school hallways.

Kara Harmon, an English teacher at since 2007, has been chosen to serve as the high school's associate principal, Superintendent Mary Gavigan announced in a news release Monday afternoon.

At Whitefish Bay High School, Harmon has served as the English department co-chair and Student Council advisor. Prior to coming to Whitefish Bay High School, she Harmon taught English at Wauwatosa West High School for nine years.

Harmon said was very satisfied with teaching at Whitefish Bay, but she was looking to move into administration. The only job she applied for was the open associate principal position, which allows her to not only stay in the school district she loves but also allows her to maintain day-to-day meaningful contact with students.

"While I won't have a direct impact in the classroom, this position allows me to cast a wider net and work with even more of our amazing students and staff," she said.

Since the news was announced Monday afternoon, Harmon said she has been flooded with an outpouring of support from former students, current students, teachers and parents in the community.

"I am truly dedicated to our district," she said. "I am really proud of our level of service, and I'm especially proud of the commitment and dedication the staff displays every day."

In the news release, Gavigan said Harmon's experience within the Whitefish Bay School District will be an asset to the district.

β€œWe are very excited to name Kara Harmon for this important role," Gavigan said in the news release. "As we move into implementation of the Focus Plan, having an experienced, respected teacher from our own organization move into this position will help us build upon our tradition and continue to reach new levels of success."

The Board of Education will act on Harmon’s contract at Wednesday's meeting.
