Fun Run Will Bring New Technology to Schools

Run the Bay organizers expecting about 1,000 people to participate in school fundraiser run on May 21.

When you participate in Run the Bay, you're not only getting a good workout – you're also helping local students learn with the help of new, emerging technology.

The 5K run/walk on May 21 starts at 9 a.m, and the Kid Fun Run follows at 9:45 a.m. All proceeds from the 5k run/walk event go directly to Whitefish Bay Public Education Foundation, which distributes the money to the four public schools in the Whitefish Bay School District for the purchase of 21st century technology. The race starts and ends at the Whitefish Bay High School stadium entrance.

Run the Bay has drawn upwards of 1,000 people in the past, and assuming the weather is nice, Run the Bay co-chair Jill Patty said she is anticipating about the same turnout this year.

After launching in 2006, the event has been held in May every year until 2009, when it was held in October. The event was not held last year, and event co-chair Jill Patty expects the community will be happy to see the event return.

“We didn’t do one last year, but we will make up for it this year,” she said.

Run the Bay is one of three fundraisers that benefits the Whitefish Bay Public Education Foundation. The group also holds the Bay Ball and sends out an annual endowment letter.

Patty said Run the Bay is unique in that everyone in the family is involved.

“It’s just a fun way for everyone to participate,” she said.

Everyone that participates in the event will receive a free T-shirt, but only those that sign up before May 6 will be guaranteed a shirt. The logo is based around a school art contest, which was won by Richards School third-grader Haley Polzin. Those who are unable to make the event can still purchase a T-shirt for $10.

Those that sign up by May 6 will pay $20 for the 5k. Kids under 12 are able to participate in either the 5k or the Kid Fun Run, both of which carry a $12 registration fee before May 6.

Those that register after May 6 will pay $25 to participate in the 5k, and kids under 12 will be charged $15 to participate in the Kids Run or the 5k.

At the end of the race, participants will be rewarded with musical entertainment and refreshments donated by area businesses.

Schools are competing to get the most families to participate. Richards School had the most participating families last year.

To register, go to the school district’s website, which will link to the sign-up page.
