Duke Pride Roundup: Soccer Team Battles Homestead for League Lead

This is the weekly Duke Pride roundup, highlighting sports and activities results and events from :

Boys Soccer: With a big win over Grafton last week, the team will travel to Homestead on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match. The winner of the game will clinch at least a tie for the conference championship as both teams are tied with 4-1 records with two games remaining. Standings at WisSports.net do not include a Blue Dukes victory over Port Washington. Kudos to the squad on an overtime win over Shorewood last Friday.

Girls Tennis: The squad competes in the conference meet this Monday at 3 p.m. and Tuesday at 4 p.m. Matches will be played at both Homestead and Nicolet.

Girls Swimming: The team kept up their winning ways by capturing the Nicolet Sprints last Saturday at Nicolet. The team is ranked No. 9 in the area by the Journal Sentinel.

Football: After , the Dukes will host Grafton at 7 p.m. on Friday. The team needs to win two of its three remaining games to qualify for the playoffs. The Blue Dukes are 2-2 in the conference and 3-3 overall.

Girls Golf: The girls golf team will compete in the regional on Wednesday at Wanaki Golf Course starting at 9 a.m.

Girls Volleyball: The girls volleyball team will host Grafton at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cross Country: The boys and girls teams both went to the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota over the weekend, running against teams from all around the Upper Midwest.

The boys were 30th of 50 teams, led by Nate Gomoll, 24th overall in 16:32. Emma Lisa Murphy finished eighth overall in the girls race, out of 419 runners, to lead the Blue Dukes to a 12th-place finish. The team is ranked fifth in the state in the coaches poll.

Hall of Fame: The inaugural class of inductees for the brand new Whitefish Bay Athletic Hall of Fame was announced last Wednesday. The induction ceremony will take place in early 2012.

Forensics/Debate: The forensics and debate teams, under the leadership of advisor Shawn Matson, were recently recognized by the National Forensic League with the prestigious 200 Club Award, putting Whitefish Bay in the top 5 percent of NFL chapters nationwide for 2011. In addition, WFBHS was one of the nation's top 25 largest-growth chapters in the 2010-11 school year. This honor comes to the credit of the many students, past and former, who have aspired to the highest standards of competition and who have given our school a national reputation. The NFL is the oldest and largest interscholastic forensic organization. This year, more than 112,000 high school students representing more than 2,800 high schools are building their communication, leadership, cognitive, and presentational skills as member. Since 1925, more than 1.3 million students have found their voice in the NFL.
