Cumberland Students Learn Where Their Food Comes From

Last year, Cumberland Elementary School students spent a week learning about water.

This year, the kids will spend a week learning about their food.

Food Week will begin with an all-school assembly, followed by 3 days of community speakers presenting to every class in the school, and culminating with a Community Potluck Dinner.

Students will also be participating in a field trip associated with Food Week. Some students will visit the WFB Community Garden, while others will tour Sendiks grocery store. Other students will go to Growing Power, the West Allis Farmers Market, or the Apple Farm.

Speakers include representatives from Alamelu’s Culinary Enterprises, Alice’s Garden, Central Greens, Edible Milwaukee Magazine, Fondy Food Center, Food Right, Growing Power, Healing Illuminations, Hunger Task Force, Kompost Kids, Milk Marketing Board, Sweet Water Foundation, UWM—Urban Agriculture, Victory Garden Initiative, Waterhouse Foods, Wellspring Farm, Wisconsin Foodie and other area businesses.

As Cumberland learns about food this week, they are also collecting non-perishable food items throughout to week to benefit a local food pantry. Food donations can be sent to school with kids or delivered during a community potluck on Friday.
