Chinese Exchange Program Seeks Student Housing

Glendale officials rejected the academy's proposal to turn the Hilton hotel into student housing.

A Chinese foreign exchange student academy is in search of student housing for its growing program, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Wisconsin International Academy program hosted about 50 students last year at private high schools, including 13 at Dominican High School. The Chinese students stayed at Baymont Inn & Suites, 5485 N. Port Washington Road, and met with their host families about once a month.

The Journal-Sentinel reports that WIA academy is expanding its presence this year to 90 high school students and 30 UW-Milwaukee students. The academy has plans to continue its growth, and to do so, sought the City of Glendale's permission to turn the Milwaukee River Hilton into a student dormitory with a cafeteria and study lounges.

The Glendale Common Council unanimously rejected that idea Monday night, despite the academy's offer to compensate Glendale for $577,000 in lost hotel room tax revenue over five years, according to the newspaper.
