UPDATE: Hayes Takes Fourth in State

Sophomore falls to last two champions in semis and third-place match.

Whitefish Bay sophomore Lily Hayes finished fourth in singles in the WIAA Division 1 individual girls tennis state tournament.

The No. 4 singles seed (26-6) routed two opponents early Friday and then needed three sets to beat Bridget Bellissimo of Middleton, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Hays beat Maddie Pung of Oshkosh West (22-6) and then seeded player Jessie Rodgers of Madison East (20-4), both 6-0, 6-0.

In the semifinals, however, Hayes fell to defending champion Maddie Johnson of Onalaska 6-4, 6-4. Johnson then lost in the final to Elizabeth Konon of Homestead, who finished 37-0. Hayes went into the consolation match and lost to another Homestead player, 2009 champ Aly Coran, 6-2, 6-1.

The Blue Dukes' other players lost Thursday in the opening round. Sophomore Asia Butler (19-10) fell to Gina Gambucci (14-8) of West Bend West 6-3, 7-6 (6). And the doubles team of Elena Ouimet and Jackie Comerford (9-12) played a tough match against seeded duo Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger of Janesville Parker (30-1) before falling 6-7 (4), 6-2 and then dropping a tiebreaker-only third set.
