Village Hall Will Get a New Roof This Year

The Village Board voted to spend nearly $300,000 last week to replace aging roofs at two municipal buildings and aging windows at the local branch of the .

The Village Board approved a $187,725 contract to Performance Roofing and Chesak Exteriors to replace the roof at , with contract provisions to also remove and dispose of the asbestos tiles, install a roof hatch and add a snow bar system.

Another $15,050 was allocated to replace a 20-year-old air conditioner on the roof of Village Hall. A number of residents have complained about the loud noise the unit makes when it cycles on and off.

The board also awarded a $64,478 contract to Performance Roofing to replace and repair the roof and insulation at 5100 Lydell Avenue, which is owned by the village and rented to . The building roof leaks chronically and many emergency repairs have not solved the problem. The business owner has resorted to putting plastic over several areas to avoid water damage.

The total contracts totaled more than $267,000, which exceeded the $245,000 budget allocation. The extra $22,000 was taken from the $35,000 surplus in the salt fund, due to less salt being used on the roads during the mild winter.

Because of the damage incurred at the Suburban Fence building over the years, the board also voted to use some of the leftover funds to improve the water-damaged electrical systems caused by past leaks in the building.

The board also awarded a $19,439 contract to Champion Factory Direct to replace all of the aging and energy-inefficient windows at the on Marlborough Drive. The building is owned by the village, not North Shore Fire Department.
