Trustees Approve Grievance Procedure for Village Employees

The policy will ultimately be folded into a larger employee handbook that will spell out benefits and terms of employment.

To keep up with the reforms made under Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, the Whitefish Bay Village Board joined municipalities and school districts across the state in adopting a grievance procedure for employees.

All local government units are required to adopt a grievance procedure by Oct. 1, under the new law.

The grievance procedure adopted unanimously Tuesday night contains language recommended by the League of Wisconsin Municipalities and will ultimately be folded into a larger employee handbook that details employee benefits and workplace standards.

The other pieces of the employee handbook will be brought before trustees incrementally, and ultimately an entire employee handbook will go before the board for approval.

The procedure consists of the employee filing a grievance with the department head, appealing the decision and submitting the grievance to the Village Manager, appealing that decision and requesting a review from an impartial hearing officer and finally, appealing the decision and asking for further review from the Village Board, or for library employees, the Library Board.
