Homeowners to be Hit With Special Tax Bill for Street Work

Property owners on 25 blocks in the village will pay a share of a $350,000 street project that will start in September.

Residents living on about 25 blocks in Whitefish Bay could get hit with a special assessment to pay for repaving and other road work on their streets.

The Village Board on Monday is expected to vote on imposing the assessments property owners on parts of the following streets: Devon Street, Shoreland Avenue, Lydell Avenue, Belle Avenue, Day Avenue, Lexington Boulevard, Diversey Boulevard, Idlewild Avenue, Hollywood Avenue, Elkhart Avenue and Lancaster Avenue (See map attached to this story).

The street work, which involves grinding off 2 inches of the top layer of old asphalt and putting new asphalt on the roads, is expected to improve road drainage and reduce the potential for flooding, village officials say.

In addition, some of those streets haven't been repaved in 35 years or more, and patching them up just isn't working any more, officials say.

The Village Board, which meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Village Hall, is expected to approve the special assessments as well as award a $350,000 contract for the street work. The village pays for the bulk of the work, but a portion — typically 25 percent to 30 percent — is paid through special assessments.

The project, if approved, will start in early September and will be wrapped up in three to four weeks, the village says.
