Sleepy Driving Causes a Bus Crash and a Vehicle Rollover

Nobody was seriously injured in either of the two accidents Sunday morning. Both drivers were cited for inattentive driving.

Two vehicle crashes in Whitefish Bay last week were caused by sleepy drivers.

A Milwaukee County transit bus headed westbound on Silver Spring Drive struck a street lamp and a garbage can Sunday morning. The driver, a 53-year-old Milwaukee man, said he felt ill and may have fallen asleep.

According to the police report, the bus jumped over the curb at Lydell Avenue and struck a combined street lamp/traffic signal and a garbage can on the north side of the road at 7:25 a.m. Sunday. The driver was cited for inattentive driving.

Earlier that morning – just after midnight – an 18-year-old Milwaukee woman also fell asleep behind the wheel, causing her to hit a tree and a light pole and roll her four-door Suzuki hatchback.

The accident at 12:38 a.m. Sunday snapped an eight-inch maple tree. The light pole crown broke off, and the pole remained standing but leaning. The woman declined treatment from NSFD paramedics and was cited for inattentive driving.
