NSFD Report: Smoke in a School; More Details From Shorewood Car Fire

The latest reports from the North Shore Fire Department.

Last week, the responded to 129 calls for service, 94 of which were EMS-related and 35 of which were fire or rescue-related.

Here are some of the calls from Bayside, Fox Point, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay:

Fox Point

  • An oven fire was reported in the 7900 block of Mohawk Road at 7:05 a.m. Jan. 17. The homeowner had the electric oven in cleaning mode for about an hour when she noticed excessive smoke and fire. She opened the oven door in the middle of the cleaning cycle with the intent to extinguish the fire with flour or baking soda, but then she closed the door and called the fire department. Light to moderate smoke was found throughout the home. The firefighters pulled the stove out, de-engergized the appliance and breached the wall directly behind it to cool the wall.
  • An over-pressured steam pipe at Fox Point-Bayside School led to smoke in the air in room 109 of the school. Firefighters were able to shut down the boiler, and after the steam leak stopped, they opened the radiator and found a broken pipe.

Bayside

  • A two-vehicle accident on I-43 left one car on its side, but neither driver was injured in the accident at 12:49 p.m. Jan. 20. The box truck that was found on its right side was laying on median cables, and the rear door was open. After more than an hour, a large tow truck arrived to assist.

Shorewood

  • An elderly man who drove his car into four other cars in the parking lot before it started on fire Saturday afternoon. Police pulled the unconscious man out of the burning car, and two of the officers later drove themselves to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire also spread to another car in the lot, breaking out the rear window and damaging the rear of the second car.

Whitefish Bay

  • Carbon monoxide was found in a home in the 4900 block of North Hollywood Avenue at 11:08 p.m. Jan. 22. There were coals smoldering in the fireplace. The firefighters used natural ventilation to drop the readings to zero, then when they closed the windows again the levels remained at zero. The resident was advised to keep the damper in her fireplace in the open position. The resident was not feeling ill, and her children were not home at the time.
