NSFD Report: Vehicle Fire, Employee Trapped in Elevator

The latest reports from the North Shore Fire Department.

Last week, the responded to 132 calls for service, 78 of which were EMS related and 54 of which were fire or rescue-related.

Here are some of the calls from Bayside, Fox Point, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay and Glendale:

Shorewood

  • A gas odor was reported in ’s Arts and Science building at 7:49 a.m. on Oct. 10. Crews determined the odor was coming from the grease trap in the crawlspace under the building, and they were able to clean and ventilate the area.
  • Crews cleaned up a gasoline spill from a vehicle on the side of the road on the 1500 block of East Capitol Drive at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 10. The spill was cleaned up using bags of dry-sorb and the vehicle was towed away.
  • A power pole on the 3800 block of North Oakland Avenue caused some to worry last week. The health club manager at , 3839 N. Oakland Avenue, said several people heard a loud bang and a puff of smoke and arcing from the power pole next to the building at 3:52 p.m. Oct. 10. The building lost power for a few seconds, but the power remained out at other neighboring locations. The incident was determined to be shorted electrical equipment.
  • Firefighters extinguished a vehicle fire in the 1900 block of East Jarvis Street at 4:14 p.m. Oct. 12. The owner said she recently had exhaust work done and was advised she had a hole in her muffler. She stated she drove home from school, parked her vehicle and entered her house, and then shortly later she heard a ‘pop’ and looked outside to see her vehicle on fire. Fire officials believe the fire may have started because the it was parked on top of a pile of leaves in the street.
  • Throughout the week, NSFD monitored sewer manholes in the area of Capitol Drive and Newhall Avenue, where a gas station was found responsible for .

Bayside

  • Crews disconnected a battery back up unit that was giving off a gaseous odor in the 9000 block of North Mohawk Road at about 1 p.m. on Oct. 12. The battery was disconnected and moved outside, and the homeowner was advised to air out the basement and have the battery replaced.


Fox Point

  • Crews responded to a downed power line on the 1300 block of Goodrich Lane at 5:45 p.m. Friday. Residents in the area were warned not go to near the wires. We Energies arrived to fix the problem.


Whitefish Bay

  • Whitefish Bay police blocked traffic for a very low hanging wire across the road in the 1700 block of East Hampton Road. We Energies was notified.


Glendale

  • A Whitefish Bay woman hit a pedestrian crossing Silver Spring Drive at Mohawk Avenue in Glendale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Paramedics performed basic life support, and then the person was transported to an area hospital.
  • At Bayshore Town Center, a Boston Store employee was stuck in the store's freight elevator at 2 p.m. Saturday. Crews removed the employee from the elevator, and the store's management was instructed not to operate the elevator until it could be repaired.
