Drunk Driver Arrested After Doing Donuts in the Cemetery

The driver said she did not remember a thing after veering off the road and destroying five headstones last week.

Five gravestones were damaged after a drunk driver crashed into Union Cemetery on Lydell Avenue last week.

A witness reported that, at 6:11 p.m. July 30, the female driver exited the North Shore Post Office parking lot, weaved northbound on Lydell Avenue and failed to stop for stop signs. The car then veered into the cemetery and began to turn circles at a speed of about 15 miles per hour, according to a Glendale police report.

The male witness was able to reach into the vehicle, put the gear shifter into park, and take the keys out of the vehicle.

Glendale police had received a drunken driving report about the same vehicle about 17 minutes earlier in the 2000 block of Silver Spring Drive but was unable to locate the vehicle at that time.

The woman, who is diabetic, told police that she drank three shots of Skol vodka between 10 a.m. and noon that day, but did not believe she was impaired. She said she did not remember driving into the cemetery and knocking over gravestones.

The incident caused an estimated $9,000 in damages, including the five headstones and the damaged grass in the northeast corner of the cemetery.
