Obituary: John J. Poehlmann

Entered Eternal Life on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the age of 85. Resident of Milwaukee Catholic Home, formerly of Whitefish Bay.

Best friend and beloved husband for 58 years of the late Patricia Jean (nee VanDeuren) Poehlmann. Loving father of Paul F. (Betsy) Poehlmann of Whitefish Bay, John P. (Mary) Poehlmann of Whitefish Bay, Jeanne (Cal) Burnton of Arlington Heights, IL and William (Julie) Poehlmann of Rochester, NY.

Proud grandfather of Adam, Bridget and Joey Poehlmann; Elizabeth, Emily and Kristen Poehlmann; Kate (Ty) Bode, Ellen, Patrick and Laura Burnton, and Matthew and Nicholas Poehlmann. Dear brother of Charles (Marie) Poehlmann, Mary (Ken) Schultz, Joseph (Lois) Poehlmann, Anne (Robert) Neja, Lynn (Richard) Schowalter, Terrance (Gail) Inda and of the late Elizabeth Inda. Brother-in-law of Rev. John H. VanDeuren.

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Jack was a 1952 graduate of Marquette University Law School and has had an active legal career in the field of real estate finance and mortgage banking and related title insurance.

He served as Vice President and Real Estate Counsel in the Law Department of Firstar Corporation (formerly known as First Wisconsin Corporation) and had been affiliated with Firstar Bank Milwaukee, N.A. for 27 years. Jack had previously acted as General Counsel and Legal Officer of several smaller mortgage banking firms.

In June of 1983 the Governor, Tony Earl, appointed Jack to the Wisconsin Real Estate Board and in 1986 he was reappointed serving as a Board member for a total of seven years, receiving the State of Wisconsin “Certificate of Commendation”.

Since 1954 he was involved in the Wisconsin Mortgage Bankers Association and served as officer, director and committee chairman. Jack was a member of the Board of Directors of Wisconsin Mortgage Bankers Association Education Foundation and acted as the Corporate Secretary.

Jack was a member of the Wisconsin Bar, former member of the Milwaukee Bar (and its Real Property Section), permanent member of the Wisconsin Land and Title Association, former member of the American Land Title Association (and its Lenders’ Counsel Group) and member of Wisconsin Mortgage Bankers Association.

Jack had written several articles concerning title insurance from a mortgage lender’s view, as well as construction lending. Jack had served as a board member of the Fish Creek Condominium Association in Door County for 28 years, including serving as president.

His love for Door County provided for many years of family time and many treasured memories.

Jack was a hard working, genuine and compassionate man. His values, morals, and work ethics were to be admired and held in high regards. Jack was a “man of his word” and all that had the privilege of knowing him knew that he was one that they could always count on. He enjoyed travelling and was always up for a good round of golf with family and friends.

Jack’s true love in life was his family; he was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all whose lives he touched. As he often said – “give a smile – get a smile”.

The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you staff of Lawlis Family Hospice for their genuine care and compassion. All services are pending.
