Obituary: Eugene J. Fons

Fons was the longest-serving paperboy in Wisconsin, and a charter member of the Whitefish Bay Historical Society.

Lifelong Whitefish Bay resident Eugene Fons passed away Friday at the age of 91.

Gene was proud to have served his country in the Navy during WWII. He was a graduate of Marquette University High School, Marquette University and Marquette University Law School. He also taught for more than 20 years at Marquette University College of Business.

Gene was retired from his practice as a CPA and lawyer in Whitefish Bay, although he continued to do consulting work following his retirement. Gene was a member of the Cudworth Post, now the North Shore Post. He was the longest serving paperboy in the state of Wisconsin, a job he maintained to put himself through college.

The Fons family was pioneers in the Village of Whitefish Bay and Gene was a charter member of the Whitefish Bay Historical Society, a membership he thrived on, often giving tours of the village. He also got a great deal of satisfaction doing charity work through St. Monica’s Parish where he was not only a charter member but the longest living member of the parish.

More than anything however, Gene was an innately good man, always genuine and down to earth as exemplified in the enjoyment he received working in the gardens at his home.

Beloved husband of the late Jean (Nee Coughlin). Loving father of Mary Ciha, Margie (Steve) Musha, John (Debbie) Fons and Jerry (Ann) Fons. Caring grandfather of Genny, Julia, Jacob, Emily, Elizabeth, Erin, Sarah, Dan and Andrew. Further survived by devoted nieces and nephews, other relatives and many good friends. He was predeceased by ten siblings and their spouses.

Visitation will be held at the Feerick Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Monica’s Parish, 5601 N. Santa Monica Blvd. in Whitefish Bay on Friday, June 28, at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In loving memory of Gene, memorials in his name may be made to Marquette University, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI 53201 or St. Monica’s Parish, 160 E. Silver Spring Dr., Whitefish Bay, WI 53217.
