From My Side Of The Chair: A Hairdresser's Blog

We all do it, we all get our hair cut and (at least we hope) a licensed professional is doing the job. As a "veteran" hairdresser of over 25 yrs I thought I'd enlighten readers...

Most of us have at one time or another missed a previously scheduled appointment such as doctors, dentists, oil change, etc. but there are conquences that are perhaps not understood by many. Speaking from a professional's point of view I feel I must inform readers on well, I guess I'll say it, what a "pain in the patootie" it can be for us.

This situation happens far too often in hair salons.  I have heard comments such as "well now you'll get to eat lunch" or " now you can read that gossip magazine". Let me tell you that as great as it is to have time to eat or read the latest Hollywood drama, the bottom line is I lost $. That's it, we count on our appointments because unless we work for a quick cut establishment which pay a salary, we are paid a commission or we independent hairdressers lose the entire amount which pays our rent, supplies and other business expenses. Another scenario is that the time slot reserved for the "no show" was possibly a time that another client desired, leaving them to take another time slot that wasn't as convenient for them, they may have booked with another stylist because "you were too busy and I needed to get in",or worse yet, went to an entirely different salon. Again, I lost $.

I am not trying to be a whiner because I totally understand that things come up and emergencies happen, and sometimes we just have too much on our plates, I just wanted to be a spokesperson on behalf of professionals that rely on your patronage. I myself have missed appointments in the past but now I really try to be better organized because I am aware of the inconvenience that can result. (lots of post-it notes)
